With the commissioning of the coal-fired power plant, it provided not only electricity generation but also heat supply for large areas of the Peenemünde test facilities. For example, the large factory halls in the experimental series plant, the barracks of the Lager des Versuchskommandos Nord Karlshagen, and some buildings in the housing estate were heated. Via a widely branched system with long-distance pipes, some of which were laid above or below ground, the buildings were supplied with 132°C hot steam. Two pipes ran from the power plant parallel to the S-Bahn track to a distribution building. From here, the pipe network branched out into the individual supply sections. After World War II, the district heating network was dismantled by the Soviet occupation forces. The Peenemünde power plant then only generated electrical energy until 1990. Today, the power plant, the largest industrial monument in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, houses the Historical-Technical Museum Peenemünde.
