Osterode's city wall was first documented in 1233; it was approximately 1,700 meters long and had four gates: the Neustädter Tor, the Jacobitor, the Johannistor, and the Marientor, all of which were demolished in the 19th century. Street names still commemorate these gates today. The Sun Tower and the small Powder Tower are located on part of the city wall. https://www.osterode.de/info/poi/pulver-und-sonnenturm-stadtmauer-912000396-21351.html

This remarkable monument stands in front of the "Old Town Hall" in Osterode am Harz, as a testament to the history of donkey drivers. At that time, there were only a few roads in the Harz, which were rare and only roughly paved. Many places could only be reached via field and forest paths. Therefore, a kind of donkey drivers' guild was formed, which took over the transport of food from the Harz grain store to the Upper Harz. The so-called donkey drivers, highly respected merchants at the time, usually traveled to the Upper Harz with caravans of up to twenty donkeys. These animals carried the heavy sacks safely over the then poor, narrow roads. The donkey drivers' clothing consisted of a blue linen smock (called a Kruiperkittel), Manchester trousers, and brown gaiters. This included a leather whip, which served as a signaling and communication tool. https://www.osterode.de/portal/seiten/herz-der-osteroder-altstadt-912000545-21351.html

Here, not far from the market square in Osterode, there is a special stamp for the Harz Witches' Trail. The official start and finish point of the Witches' Trail is not until later, but you should take the stamp with you as a souvenir. The special stamp, like the special stamp from the Witches' Throne, is not a mandatory stamp for obtaining the Witches' Trail badge!
