Excerpt from Audi press release: Audi Environmental Foundation inaugurates third transformer tower for species protection project • Transformer station in Ittlingen is now a "Biodiversity Stele" • Object aims to raise awareness for the protection of endangered animal and plant species Ingolstadt/Ittlingen, October 23, 2015 – The Audi Stiftung für Umwelt will inaugurate a transformer station for endangered animal species in Ittlingen near Heilbronn this Saturday. As part of the "Stelen der Biodiversität" project, the foundation has realized three objects in recent months together with the association "Artenschutz in Franken®" – in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and Thuringia. In addition to concrete species protection, environmental education is also a focus of the project, as Dr. Dagobert Achatz, Managing Director of the Audi-Umweltstiftung, says: "The goal is to familiarize local people with their native nature in cooperation with non-profit institutions and to inspire them for the preservation of biodiversity." In Ittlingen, the Audi-Umweltstiftung is working with the St. Thomas association and the community's family center. To date, the foundation has redesigned three former transformer houses in Ittlingen, Suhl, and Bad Staffelstein as part of the nationwide project, so that they offer valuable habitats for numerous, partly endangered, animal species. In Ittlingen in the upper Elsenz valley, these are primarily Kuhl's pipistrelle bats, barn owls, and little owls. To draw the attention of visitors and walkers to environmental protection, the artist Michael Horn painted the repurposed transformer tower with large-scale animal and plant motifs. An information board provides details about the project and the animal species housed there. A flyer offers an overview of the environmental project and the three "Biodiversity Steles." QR codes invite users to a virtual tour with comprehensive information about the species protection project. In Suhl and Bad Staffelstein, interested parties can also obtain multimedia information, for example by observing animals via webcams.

The place is called Ittlingen, not Hittlingen

The building, built in 1910/11 as the "New Schoolhouse" in the style of a hunting lodge with two round towers on either side of the main façade, was converted into a town hall in 1976. More information on the information board on site.

The Stele of Biodiversity is a project that converts disused transformer houses into habitats for endangered animal species. These steles serve both species protection and environmental education. This tower is equipped with special secondary habitats that provide high-quality living and breeding spaces for native animal species. A special highlight is the bat thermal chamber, which creates a valuable retreat for bats.
