At the foot of the slag heap sits the Ewald mine. There are restaurants and plenty to explore. The Hoheward slag heap is a true highlight of the slag heap, offering the best views over the Ruhr region.

Unfortunately, I didn't count the steps, but there were quite a few to get from the Ewald Colliery to the slag heap plateau. There must be at least 300 steps, which can take your breath away, before you can enjoy the breathtaking panorama of the Ruhr region from the slag heap plateau.

⚒️Mine mallet and iron⚒️ Symbol of mining. A sledgehammer and a type of chisel - or: mallet and iron. These were once the most important tools in mining. It's no wonder, then, that they were used as miners' coats of arms as early as the 16th century. Operations began in 1873 - operations ended in 2000. The mine at shaft 4 has received a light installation by the Berlin artist Gunda Förster. The light installation "Contours" has been on display since December 10, 2021, from dusk until sunrise. The contours of the 64m high headframe tower and the two mine fans were clad in white LED strips, which are somehow reminiscent of the film Tron Legacy💡.
