May 5, 2026, Hyrtlplatz and Dr. Hyrtl Orphanage

The Hyrtl Orphanage was an orphanage in Mödling (Mödling district) in Lower Austria. The first three building sections were built in 1886 by master builder and architect Eugen Sehnal, and the further buildings were erected by various master builders until 1906. The financing was possible because the well-known anatomist Josef Hyrtl donated his fortune for the construction. In 1906, the complex reached its greatest extent.

In the so-called „Hafnerhaus“, a Renaissance building from the 2nd half of the 16th century with beautiful pillar arcades in the courtyard and two Gothic bay windows, Ludwig van Beethoven spent the summer months of 1818 and 1819.

In 1889, on the initiative of P. Arnold Janssen, St. Gabriel, the second mission house of the Steyler Missionaries SVD, was established on the outskirts of Maria Enzersdorf. Austria's most important mission institution was also the home of scientific researchers who undertook ethnographic expeditions to South America, central India, and Central Africa. In 1925, the mission house, originally planned as a school, had 650 residents of its own. Alongside the training center, a Mission Ethnographic Museum was established.

The ecologically oriented care and design of the monastery park are a great help to animal and plant species, as suitable habitats are not always easy to find within settlement areas. As diverse green spaces as possible are particularly important for biodiversity in densely built-up areas.

The Spitalkirche hl. Ägidius is a late Gothic Roman Catholic hall church in Mödling and was built from 1443 to 1453. The name comes from the fact that there was a hospital in the adjoining building to the west. Under the designation Spital in the earlier sense, a home for the poor and elderly is to be understood.

Inside, there are a number of historical items about Mödling and beyond. It's quite interesting, and admission is included in the Lower Austria Card.
