The Aschach originally flowed into the Danube at Aschach. Due to the construction of the power plant (1960s), it was relocated 'downstream' through the Alkovner Au and flows into the Innbach shortly after this point. In the 2000s, it was renatured and connected to the Danube below Aschach via a lock, thus creating Europe's longest fish ladder. Fish can now swim up from below the Ottensheim power plant via the Innbach and the Aschach to the upper waters of the Danube.

Aschach an der Donau is one of those places that you visit and immediately feel like you are in a postcard. It is one of the oldest and most charming market towns in Upper Austria (Eferding district) and is located directly on the great Danube loop. For centuries, Aschach was an important hub for shipping and trade. This is still reflected in the townscape today. The row of houses directly on the Danube promenade largely dates from the 16th century (Renaissance and Baroque). The facades are magnificently restored and a popular photo motif.
