Old Church of St. Ulrich, Götzis It is the oldest building in Götzis, around 1000 years old in its core and our most important cultural asset: the Old Church. Götzis has a rich tradition as one of the oldest ecclesiastical settlements. The patronage of the Old Parish Church points to the far-reaching influence of St. Ulrich, who was born in nearby St. Gallen and became Bishop of Augsburg in 924 as the successor to his uncle Adalbero. The founding of the pastoral station in Götzis probably took place in the 11th century. The parish itself is not mentioned in documents until 1421. The Old Parish Church is still a silent testimony to the late Middle Ages. Once located in the center of the settlement, in the 19th century it was moved to the southwestern edge of the street village, to the lower village. The "old" Ulrich parish church was documented as having been built in 1340 and the mighty church tower is reminiscent of the old building, as excavations in 1980 have shown. A new building was decided in 1500 and supported by a letter of indulgence from twelve Roman cardinals. The church was enlarged around 1509 and consecrated in 1514 with four altars in honor of Saint Ulrich and Catherine (high altar), Mary and James (right side altar), Eligius and Sebastian (left side altar) by Bishop Paul Ziegler of Chur. The west portal and probably the upper floor of the north tower have also been preserved from the late Gothic period. The architecture does not allow a clear attribution to a known master builder in Vorarlberg. In 1976, during restoration work, frescoes from the 17th century were uncovered. The triumphal arch wall shows an illustrative depiction of the Last Judgement. Ribbons of writing name the vices: "sluggishness", "unruliness", and also depict drinking, gluttony and anger. The northern nave wall shows scenes from the Passion of Jesus. Coats of arms and figures of the donors are incorporated here.
