Even the name is a deception, because when we hear of a castle of the order, we automatically think of the Middle Ages and have the image of noble knights in mind. However, the facility "Ordensburg Vogelsang", built during the so-called "Third Reich" (i.e., almost a century ago), was intended to serve as one of three institutions of its kind as a training ground for the future leaders of the national socialist regime of injustice. Today, it stands in the middle of the Eifel National Park, and parts of the massive building complex now house both the exhibition "Bestimmung Herrenmensch" (Destiny: Master Race) and the National Park Information Centre with a magnificent exhibition "Erlebnis(t)räume" (Experience(d) Dreams) about the flora and fauna of the only National Park in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In the midst of the beautiful landscape of the Nordeifel, the hiker encounters – for example on the „Wildnistrail“, a four-day tour through the Eifel National Park – between Einruhr and Gemünd this ostentatious building complex. It was not built in the Middle Ages, but only in the last century by the National Socialists and was intended to serve as an „Ordensburg“ for the training of the NS cadre. The exhibition „Bestimmung Herrenmensch“ points to this past nowadays. In addition, there is also the information center „Erlebnis(t)räume“ of the National Park administration.
