Tips from the Community

Joschi
September 26, 2026, Gasthaus Schloss Blumenthal

Schloss Blumenthal near Aichach has a multigenerational housing project and is a vibrant community. The historic 13th-century estate (later Fugger Castle) was restored starting in 2006 by a group of like-minded people who wanted to implement a future-oriented, ecological lifestyle in an old castle. The castle is inhabited and operated by a group of about 40 people. There are no typical hotel chain structures, but rather a familial, relaxed atmosphere. On the farm, there is a restaurant, its own cheese dairy, agriculture, and a farm shop. The complex is quietly located amidst a large castle park, forest, and meadows. It offers no pool or fitness center, but instead nature experiences, a beer garden, a playground, and the opportunity to see animals such as alpacas, donkeys, and goats. In addition to accommodation, the castle serves as a popular location for weddings (with its own small baroque church on the premises), seminars, and concerts.

Presumably around 1254, the Teutonic Order acquired the Blumenthal manorial estate and managed it through a monastic house. It was first mentioned in documents in 1296 under the name "Blümenthal". Even at that time, Blumenthal received low jurisdiction from the Bavarian Duke. It initially served as a Commandery (leading monastic house) of the order in the Teutonic Order's bailiwick of Franconia and, after the abandonment of the Teutonic Order's house in Aichach, from 1396 onwards, it became the main seat of the Commanders (heads of the monastic houses). In 1405, the castle received the right to sell drinks from Duke Stephen III of Bavaria-Ingolstadt.
