FORMER STEINHAUS BREWERY - Beer culture in Burg The year 1576 is considered the founding year of the Steinhaus brewery. Burger beer was brewed here until 1983. Numerous other breweries once produced beer for the beer-loving citizens of Burg. Beer production represented an important source of income for the city. The first indications of beer culture can be found in the 12th century. The Kälterling (today a street name) gets its name from a famous Burger beer. A beer brewed in the small town of Tautenburg was called "Kälterling". In Münster, it was called "Költe". Archbishop Friedrich von Borch had the right to brew wheat beer, in addition to the usual barley and oat beers. It is interesting to learn that, in addition to the usual barley and oat beers, brewing rights in the 16th century were valued as pocket money. Later, in 1509, it was counted from a document with brewing rights. In the year 1509, every local paid one guilder for the brewing right. However, every stranger had to pay two guilders to the council. Later, in 1531, the surrounding farmers were forbidden to sell self-brewed beer. This ban was poorly enforced, leading to a veritable beer war that ended with the city's victory. St. Peter's Church (today St. Petri in Franzosenstraße) was even converted into a brewery in 1677. In the 19th century, there were still 24 breweries in Burg, and by 1900 only six remained. Family businesses like Schmidt, Gebhardt, Krepper, Pabst, and Kleinlein provided the "wet gold" in glasses. The economic situation of the post-war period hit the breweries hard. Only the Schmidt and Feldschlösschen breweries survived. The oldest Burg brewery (Steinhaus Brauerei) closed on February 6, 1983. The Feldschlösschen brewery ceased operations in 1990 as the last one.

The historic town mill in Burg near Magdeburg (also known as the water mill on Breiter Weg) is one of the city's most striking technical monuments. The stately, brightly plastered building with its large arched gateway is picturesquely located directly on a loop of the river Ihle. For centuries, the water mill shaped the artisanal and industrial development of the region. Today, the renovated building complex is a popular photo motif during city tours and primarily serves as a residential and commercial property in the middle of the historic city center.

Next to the Oberkirche, the Unterkirche Sankt Nicolai shaped the city's history in the 12th century. The Romanesque granite ashlar building was erected from approx. 1155 to 1186 as the parish church of the Unterstadt. The church is a cruciform pillar basilica with a two-towered west facade. Sankt Nicolai is considered the largest Romanesque granite basilica east of the Elbe and is thus a special sign of fieldstone architecture. The furnishings are kept simple and modest. The pulpit and the magnificent epitaph were created at the beginning of the 17th century. The oldest gravestone in the "Unterkirche" dates from the year 1321. https://www.touristinfo-burg.de/sehenswertes/kirchen/kirche-sankt-nicolai.html
