The Brothausturm in Traunstein is an impressive relic of the medieval city fortifications and, at the same time, a place with socio-historical depth – a tower that unites bread, civic spirit, and architectural art 🍞🏰. 🕰️ History & Function Built: 1541 as part of the upper city fortifications. Name: The term "Brothausturm" originates from the 19th century when local historians discovered that bread was sold in the vault below the tower. Baker's Duty: Previously, bakers had to offer their goods at fixed prices in a central location – initially in the town hall vault, and after the city fire of 1851, for a few years in the Brothausturm. 🏛️ Architecture & Ensemble The tower is now part of the Heimathaus, which forms an ensemble with the neighboring Zieglerwirtshaus. The Zieglerwirtshaus displays typical features of Inn-Salzach architecture: arcades, bay windows, and raised firewalls. The inscription on the west side of the tower reads: "Stadt und Land, Hand in Hand, eines Gau’s Heimathaus" – a poetic motto for the interplay of region and history. 🖼️ Today's Use The Brothausturm houses parts of the Traunstein City Museum, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023. Exhibitions showcase local history, crafts, art, and everyday culture – a place of remembrance and encounter. 📍 Location Address: Stadtplatz 2–3, 83278 Traunstein Visit: Free museum admission, opening hours vary – often by appointment only.

🕰️ Taubenmarkt: Historic Market Square The name refers to the former bird and pigeon trade that regularly took place here. The square is centrally located in the old town, near the town square, and is surrounded by historic facades and small shops. Today, it is a popular meeting place for locals and visitors – with cafés, events, and access to cultural highlights such as the Brothausturm and the local history museum. ⛲ Vogelhändlerbrunnen: Sculpture with Local Flair The fountain depicts a bird seller with a basket and pigeons, a tribute to the former trade. The figure is lovingly designed and conveys a piece of everyday history – a symbol of the connection between tradition and city life. Particularly charming: The combination of the fountain basin, the figure, and the surrounding paving, which atmospherically rounds off the square. 📍 Location & Surroundings The Taubenmarkt is just a few steps away from the town square and can be easily integrated into walks through the old town. In the immediate vicinity: St. Oswald Church, Brothausturm, Heimathaus, and the

Traunstein was a typical founding town of the Wittelsbach dynasty. A Brief History of the Jacklturm "Perhaps the only town in Germany without a decorative gate or a tower," lamented local historian Max Fürst around 1900. After the devastating fire of April 25, 1851, which destroyed the entire upper town, the citizens had other concerns than rebuilding the tower. The burnt-out ruins were demolished in 1851. As part of the late medieval fortifications, a ring wall with gates and towers, the Jacklturm has had a turbulent history. In 1547, it was severely damaged by lightning; makeshift repairs were followed by demolition and rebuilding in 1548. The first reliable view of the town, the ceiling painting by Hans Thonauer in the Antiquarium of the Munich Residence, shows it around 1590 as a defensive tower with an open guard walkway. In 1553, the tower received tiled stoves, doors, and windows. From then on, a watchman lived on the upper floors. He was responsible for keeping an eye out for fires. A fire bell was added in 1623 to raise the alarm. The night watchmen then sounded the fire alarm. The watchman was also responsible for blowing the trumpet from the tower morning, midday, and evening. It wasn't until 1787 that the name "Jacklturm" first appeared in a register of municipal buildings. Despite all attempts at interpretation, the origin of this name remains obscure to this day.
