Aptera is historically one of the most significant city-states of Crete. Here are a few facts that make this place so special: Strategic Location: The city sits enthroned on a plateau about 150-200 meters above the sea. From here, the Apterians controlled their two ports (Minoa near Marathi and Kissamos near Kalyves) and thus the trade in this part of the Mediterranean. The Myth of the Name: There are two beautiful legends about the origin of the name “Aptera” (Greek for “wingless”): One says that the Sirens lost a musical contest against the Muses here. Ashamed, the Sirens lost their wings, whereupon they plunged wingless (a-ptera) into the sea, forming the so-called “white islands” off the coast.

The Temple of Saint John the Theologian and Saint Nicholas was built at the entrance of the village of Stylos. It is a complex of three buildings from the 13th to 15th century, which preserves a fragmentary wall decoration from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries.

As you walk around, an inconspicuous, restored building turns out to be an old watermill, from the back of which the dynamic element emerges from 5 beautifully bricked round arches. It is the largest watermill in Crete and the only one that was fed by special pipes. It was still used as an oil mill until 1960. https://www.cretanbeaches.com/el/%CF%80%CE%B1%CF%81%CE%AC%CE%B4%CE%BF%CF%83%CE%B7/%CE%B1% CF%81%CF%87%CE%B9%CF%84%CE%B5%CE%BA%CF%84%CE%BF%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AE/%CE %BC%CF%85%CE%BB%CE%BF%CF%84%CF%8C%CF%80%CE%B9%CE%B1/%CE%BD%CE%B5%CF%81%CF% 8C%CE%BC%CF%85%CE%BB%CE%BF%CF%82-%CE%BA%CE%BF%CE%B9%CE%BB%CE%B9%CE%AC%CF%81 %CE%B7-%CF%83%CF%84%CE%BF-%CF%83%CF%84%CF%8D%CE%BB%CE%BF
