The path from Rhenen to Veenendaal is short. And yet it feels as if I am walking between two worlds. Behind me the small family cemetery of the Franks, almost hidden, three gravestones, a silent passage from Job. In front of me Veenendaal, a growing city, industry, textile factories, steam weaving mills, modern streets. And yet, here too, everything begins small. In the mid-17th century, the first Jewish families settle in Veenendaal. They first pray in the house of a Jewish tenant who runs the local loan bank. Again this pattern emerges: loan banks. Meat trade. Small businesses. Tolerance in exchange for utility. The Jewish communities on the Lower Rhine and in Gelderland do not arise in the center of power, but on the fringes of economic functions. But the small group grows. In the early 18th century, it is already large enough to form an organized community. A first small synagogue is built outside the village. Outside. That too says a lot about Europe. Jewish life was often allowed to exist — but slightly offset, slightly removed, slightly outside. In 1761, the Jews of Veenendaal receive the right to bury their dead in the Jewish cemetery in Wageningen. The path between the cities thus became not only a trade route, but also a route for the dead. This is one of the reasons why this landscape feels different from modern spaces: People were much more connected to each other, even across small distances. Rhenen. Wageningen. Veenendaal. Arnhem. Not isolated places — but a network. And in the midst of it, family conflicts, divisions, reconciliations. This work of art consists of two domes built from steel arches. Under each of the domes, there is a stone with a small bronze figurine on it. The two human figures look at each other. Ten linden trees were also planted years ago, which were part of the artwork. The design was conceived and created by the Dutch sculptor Nout Visser.

In addition to a municipal and a Catholic cemetery, the relatively young Veenendaal also has a Jewish cemetery. However, this did not come in the seventeenth or eighteenth century, but only in 1900. Yet Veenendaal had a Jewish community since the middle of the seventeenth century and later even two for a while. The latter was mainly due to the fact that Veenendaal at the time had a part in Gelderland and a part in Utrecht. The first Jews in Veenendaal came here from 1630, from Eastern Europe and Germany. Wars were raging there at the time and Jews were persecuted, which explained their arrival in the Netherlands. The establishment itself was not permitted around and in the city of Utrecht, but it was permitted in other villages and towns. In 1655 there was an 'emergency synagogue' in Veenendaal, which meant that there were enough Jews living in the area to hold services. A common profession among Jews was banker, someone who dealt with loans and mortgages. In addition, people traded in cattle or were butchers, which was a godsend for both the Jewish residents and others, especially in the early years of Veenendaal.
