In the Lünsholz forest near Unterlüß, the natural monument "Tilemannsche Eiche" (Tilemann Oak) stands and commemorates the chief forester Carl Tilemann, who promoted the systematic reforestation of former heathland in the 19th century. Carl Tilemann was born on December 3, 1796, and served as chief forester in this area from 1876 onward. He died in Eschede on August 2, 1872, with the rank of chief forester. Carl Tilemann rendered great service through the care of the surrounding forest, the "Lüßwald" (Lüß Forest). With approximately 8,000 hectares, this "Lüß Forest" is one of the largest forest areas in Germany. It was once a favorite hunting ground of the Dukes of Celle, who had their hunting lodge in nearby Weyhausen. Data on the natural monument: Sessile oak - height: 22 meters - trunk circumference: 3.44 m (as of October 2022) - also called “Tilemann oak” or “Tilemann oak” in earlier usage.

One of the oldest natural forests in Lower Saxony with old beech and oak trees. Territory for many rare species of birds (woodpeckers, owls, stock pigeons, ravens), which is one of the reasons why you should adhere to the trail regulations!
