The planks lack mesh, which can make the planks very slippery when freezing or wet. This area is marshy, but occasionally you can walk next to the planks.

This lock, like Haansvaart, was constructed by Hendrik de Haan in 1867 and served to ship fertile mound soil to the agricultural land near his farm. In 1909 his son rebuilt the hermitage. On the lock keeper's house you can still find a sign with the original toll prices. The bicycle bridge was built so that it is possible to cycle around Schildmeer.

The lock was built together with the Haansvaart between 1866 and 1867 by Hendrik de Haan (1827-1899) to transport fertile mound soil through the Schildjerpolder to the agricultural land near his farm south of Hellum and poor sand from his lands back through the lock. At high water, the lock was used as a flood lock to keep high water from the Schildmeer from the grounds of the Duurswolder polders located there. After the Second World War, the canal and lock fell into disuse. After the last ship passed through the lock in the 1970s, the lock was taken out of use by the province in 1974 and then gradually fell into disrepair. The lock was restored in 2010. The municipality of Slochteren had a bicycle bridge built to create a 'missing link' in the International Dollard Route and to enable a 'round trip to Schildmeer'. The lock is accessible for lighter boats such as flat-bottomed boats and canoes.
