Ubbo Wilkens was mayor of Veendam from 1907-1910 and from 1920 until his death in 1921. From 1910-1920 he was deputy of the province of Groningen. At his death he left the municipality a bequest of 3000 guilders for the construction of the fountain. It was not until 1934 that the fountain was put into use. The fountain commemorates the connection of Veendam to the water supply network. Something that Ubbo Wilkens, who was mayor at the time, valued greatly. The Ubbo Wilkensfontein is a design by the Amsterdammer C.L van Huguenoth-Van de Linden and was executed by the sculptor G. Marree from Amsterdam.

The Damkerk is a hall church that was built in Hoogezand in the 17th century. Protestant worship, which emerged in the course of the 16th century, needed hall churches because the sermon was central here and the visibility of the minister was therefore of great importance. Many early Protestant churches were designed as hall churches, from Wikipedia See further: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damkerk_(Hoogezand)

In the midst of a monumental building from 1911, the Veenkoloniaal Museum in Veendam impressively demonstrates the development and history of the Groningen Fehnkolonien: the fascinating, glorious past of this region. The museum presents changing and permanent exhibitions, art, culture and history, the extraction of peat and the emergence of this unique cultural landscape. It tells the stories of the many hundreds of barges, the dozens of miles of canals, the emergence of the traditional potato starch and straw carton industry and the countless seafarers of this region. The focus is on the 19th century. The age of tremendous upheavals. Around 1850, more than 60 percent of the Dutch maritime fleet comes from the Groningen Fehnkolonien. The states on the Baltic Sea are chosen as the most important trading partner.
