2026 is the year of the Roman Empire. There are over 100 sculptures on this theme to admire, plus some on the theme of the previous year, 750 years of Amsterdam. I found it great and well worth the entrance fee of 15.50 Euros.

The Grevelweg near Elspeet is almost impossible to navigate with a regular bike. There are many holes and deep grooves in the unpaved path. Unfortunately, I fell off my bike. Be careful!

The Veluwe offers a vast network of over 390 touring cycling routes designed to be traffic-free, ensuring a peaceful and immersive experience. Most of these, around 290, are rated as easy, making them accessible for a wide range of cyclists.
The Veluwe's no-traffic routes feature a diverse terrain, from the rolling hills and forests of Veluwezoom National Park to expansive heathlands and even unique sand drifts like the Kootwijkerzand. While much of the Netherlands is flat, the Veluwe offers gentle ascents and descents, providing varied cycling challenges and scenic viewpoints.
Yes, many of the Veluwe's traffic-free routes are ideal for families. The region's extensive network includes numerous easy paths through woodlands and heathlands, perfect for all ages. Consider routes that pass through areas like the Deer Statue on Hertjesweg – Rietveld Pavilion loop from Roekel for a pleasant family outing.
You'll encounter a wealth of natural beauty and landmarks. Highlights include the vibrant purple heathlands in August, the ancient 'dancing trees' of the Speulderbos, and Europe's largest sand drifts at Kootwijkerzand. Don't miss the panoramic views from the Posbank Viewpoint or the tranquil Loenen Waterfall. The monumental Radio Kootwijk building also stands as a unique landmark amidst the sand drifts.
The Veluwe is beautiful year-round, but spring (April-May) offers blooming wildflowers and mild temperatures, while late summer (August-September) is spectacular when the heathlands are in full purple bloom. Autumn brings stunning foliage. Summer can be warm, but the shaded forest routes provide relief. Always check local weather forecasts before you go.
Yes, the Veluwe is well-equipped with charming cafes, restaurants, and picnic spots, especially in and around the villages and national parks. Many routes are designed to pass by these establishments, allowing for pleasant breaks. You'll often find options near popular attractions and at the entrances to larger natural areas.
Absolutely. Many of the no-traffic touring routes in the Veluwe are circular, allowing you to start and end at the same point without retracing your steps. An example is the Speulderbos and Ermelo Heath Cycle Route, which offers a beautiful loop through diverse landscapes.
The Veluwe is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars. Reviewers often praise the region's extensive network of quiet, traffic-free paths, the stunning natural diversity from forests to heathlands and sand drifts, and the abundant wildlife spotting opportunities, especially in areas like those covered by the Cycle through the forests of the Veluwe in search of wildlife route.
Yes, the Veluwe region is well-connected by public transport, making it easy to reach starting points for many cycling routes. Trains serve towns like Apeldoorn, Ede-Wageningen, and Harderwijk, from where local buses can take you closer to the national parks and trailheads. Some bus lines are equipped to carry bicycles, but it's advisable to check in advance.
Numerous parking facilities are available at key access points to the Veluwe's cycling network, particularly near national park entrances, visitor centers, and larger villages. These often provide convenient starting points for traffic-free routes. Look for designated parking areas near popular trailheads to ensure easy access.
Generally, no specific permits are required for cycling on public paths in the Veluwe. However, if you plan to cycle within certain national parks, such as De Hoge Veluwe National Park, there is an entrance fee. This fee typically covers access to the park's facilities and its internal cycling network, including the use of their famous 'white bikes'.
