In 1879, the city council acquired the Posthalterei building for 26,400 Reichsmarks from the postmaster Mittag. It was subsequently set up as the town hall and district court. Previously, the meetings of the city council had taken place in their private homes until 1866, or in the building of the present-day Hotel Weißes Ross, acquired by the city in 1865, which was sold back to the innkeeper Gehre in 1879. On April 6, 1995, the roof structure and the interior were completely destroyed by arson. The reconstruction of the building began on July 3, 1995. The reconstruction work was completed as early as August 28, 1996, and the house was handed over to its intended use.

The historic part to the east of the area, which has existed for centuries, covered an area of approximately 40 × 40 meters. After 1945, further areas to the west were added after the buildings located here fell victim to arson and were not rebuilt. Its current form was achieved through redesign measures between the years 2007 and 2015.
