The Sparkasse building at Markstraße 17 is a remarkable architectural and urban design work, featuring a stone-carved wine cellar. Constructed between 1911 and 1912 according to plans by city architect Wilhelm Goette, it is located between Neundorfer Straße, Marktstraße, and Nobelstraße. It features high-quality decorative architecture that blends Reform Style and Neo-Baroque, also reminiscent of classical patrician houses. On the ground floor, there are profiled round-arch windows; on the upper floor, rectangular windows with flat canopies and shutters; and the eaves cornice to the mansard roof features a dentil-like frieze. The portal facing Neundorfer Straße is elaborately ornamented: a keystone, framing volute pilasters, a broad cartouche and human head on the entablature; at the corner of Nobelstraße, a copy of a hamster as the Sparkasse symbol (sculptor Johannes Schulze). The entrance to the underground wine cellar is located on Nobelstraße.

Places can tell a story: Dominican monks built their church here in the 13th century. In 1525, the people of Plauen stormed the monastery, drove out the monks and tore down the church. In 1844, after the town fire, everything changed again: now large-scale construction took place. (This is what the plaque says.) And today? You can lick a cool ice cream here or enjoy a beer.
