Milecastle 42, situated on a steep south-facing slope near Cawfields Crags along Hadrian's Wall, is a well-preserved Roman watchtower that served as a crossing and checkpoint on the northern border of the Roman Empire. Built by the Legio II Augusta in the early 2nd century AD, it has a rectangular plan of approximately 17.8 by 14.4 meters, with walls up to 1.4 meters high. Its strategic location near Hole Gap offered a view of a vulnerable depression in the terrain. Archaeological finds, including an inscription and the reused gravestone of a Pannonian soldier, indicate long-term use and subsequent redevelopment. Two associated turrets, 42A and 42B, served as lookout posts; of the former, no remains remain due to quarrying, while the latter is still visible as a grass-covered mound.
