Buckden is the epitome of a cute, charming Yorkshire village. Very nicely placed in the valley between the two tops of Birks Fell and Buckden Pike, both of which are Nuttalls. The walk to Buckden Pike from alongside Buckden Beck is particularly spectacular with its many waterfalls. There is also a good car park with toilet facilities just on the outskirts of the village.

The farm owners have a cake/treat honesty box for hikers but look carefully as it’s not obvious.

The ruins of New House Barn might be not as unusual, but it is the fact that if you stand in front of it, you will see (possibly through it) the summit of Pen-y-ghent on the horizon, making the spot an unexpected sight. Next to this path, you also have a number of hills that could be climbed if your heart so desired, e.g., Swinesett Hill, Scald Bank and News Head Hill: all grassy and posing not too great a challenge.

An incredibly beautiful spot as you cross the River Wharfe here. This is, in fact, where the River Wharf starts: at the confluence of Oughtershaw and Green Field Becks. The river grows very large and then joins the River Ouse downstream near Cawood.
