Documents show that a chapel already existed in Satterthwaite in the late 16th century. It was a chapel of ease, a building that stood separate from the main church of a parish, making it more accessible to some parishioners. The main church at that time was St. Michael's Church in Hawkshead. The first church in Satterthwaite was built in 1837 by Montague Ainslie. In early English style, it had a narrow, square tower with a single bell and a gallery on the west side. All Saints Church became a separate church in 1881 and was renovated in 1888 for £450, with the roof and windows being adapted and the gallery removed. (Satterthwaite Parish Community Website)
