May 2, 2026, Square Castan Archaeological Site

This is a large, unidentified semi-circular complex, probably dating from the 2nd or 3rd century, from the time of the ancient Gallo-Roman city of Vesontio. This square is located not far from the Porte Noire, an important witness to this period of the city. It was only in 1870 that the archaeologist and town librarian Auguste Castan undertook excavations there. He discovered eight Corinthian columns that were re-erected, the remains of the water distribution basin of the Arcier aqueduct (a small locality 15 kilometers away) which supplied the city in Roman times, and those of a semi-circle with an inner diameter close to 54 meters.

Its foundation is attested as early as the 6th century. The church was demolished and rebuilt several times; the current Jesuit-style building dates from the early 18th century. During the Revolution, after the church was deconsecrated, all of its interior furnishings were sold at auction. Then, the church itself met the same fate.

Founded in the 4th century, the current church was built from 1782 to 1786 according to the plans of architect Claude-Joseph-Alexandre Bertrand. The significant height of the bell tower is explained by its role as the town hall's belfry, thus carrying the municipal bell high up, and as a watchman's lodge.

Chamars Promenade. This is one of Besançon's historic green spaces, laid out in the 18th century on the former Champ-de-Mars and still marked by Vauban's fortifications. (Copilot)

It's not the prettiest building in the city, but it's also special, like almost all of them.
