The SS Charcot was a ship built for whaling in the North Atlantic. The steel ship was built in 1923 in Tønsberg, Norway. In 1943, it was sold to the Polar Whaling Company, based in southern Labrador. It was subsequently sold to the Hawkes Harbour Whaling Company, based in Conception Bay. The ship was 36.5 meters long, 6.6 meters wide, and weighed 212 tons. It was one of five whaling ships owned by Captain Johan Borgen of the Hawke Harbour Whaling Company. In 1970, the ship broke its moorings during a storm and was driven ashore. Today, the rusted hull of the ship juts out of the water, resting on a beach near Conception Harbour, 4 km north of Avondale. For many years, locals believed this ship to be another whaling vessel named SS Sposa. However, when the Shipwreck Preservation Society of NL began underwater investigations of the ship, it was discovered to be the SS Charcot. While investigating the ship, they discovered two other whaling ships lying on the seabed behind the Charcot. After surveying the sunken vessels, they concluded that the two ships were the whaling ships SS Southern Foam and SS Sukha.
