April 20, 2025, Braunsbrunnen (Saint Bruno's Spring)

According to legend, Saint Brun of Querfurt (974 to 1009) caused the water of the Braunsbrunnen to bubble up in 1004 by striking a stone with his sword. He needed water immediately because he had to baptize eight infants who were to be drowned in the Querne River. The order to do so had been given by Brun's sister-in-law, the wife of his brother Gebhard. The Lord of Querfurt was traveling and his wife gave birth to nine children. Since it was believed at the time that multiple births could not possibly be the result of a single man, she was afraid of being accused of adultery. So she instructed her maid to drown eight of the nine children. But Saint Brun prevented this and placed the infants with various Querfurt families. Two years later, before leaving on his missionary journey to the East, he told his brother about the incident. On the condition that Gebhard not be angry with his wife, the eight two-year-olds returned to their parents. They were similar to each other and to their little brother, who had remained at the castle, and they all looked very much like their father.

The Braunsbrunnen commemorates Saint Bruno and the legend of the nine children. After that, Count Gebhard, noble lord of Querfurt, believed that multiple births must also include the corresponding number of fathers. When the castle mistress gave birth to nine children in Gebhard's absence, she gave eight of the boys to her maid, who was supposed to carry them in a cauldron to the pond and drown them. On her way she met Saint Bruno, who prevented her from doing what she wanted. He struck a stone and suddenly a spring bubbled up. Then he baptized all eight children and distributed them among the families of Querfurt. Later he gave them back to their parents. The monument was erected in 1935. Source: Information board on site
