The Santa Maria degli Angeli is an impressive chapel on the Alpe Foppa above Rivera. Designed by the renowned architect Mario Botta, it combines modern architecture with spiritual tranquility. A striking footbridge leads spectacularly to the building, opening up views of the Ticino mountain landscape. Inside, intensely colorful works by the artist Enzo Cucchi are impressive. The chapel is a popular destination for hikers and culture enthusiasts. It uniquely combines nature, art, and contemplation and is one of the architectural highlights in Ticino.

One of our favorite hikes in Ticino! Scenic driveway with the post bus from Magadino. Short climb from the Alpe di Neggia (unfortunately closed), magnificent view from Monte Gambarogno and a beautiful, comfortable descent to Alpe Cedullo (be sure to stop off). Mostly through Buchenwald down to Indemini and with the post bus (note the timetable!) back to Magadino.

This point is an obligatory stop, because it is really worth it, for hikers who have decided to take the beautiful Tamaro->Lema crossing or vice versa Lema->Tamaro 😊

Can you see the Verzasca dam on the right? The opening scene of James Bond Goldeneye was filmed there. I'm referring to Pierce Brosnan's 300m deep bungee jump. In the film, the location was sold to the viewer as Belarus. Now you know better.

Muralto serves as a gateway to several remarkable peaks in the Ticino region. Among the most popular are Monte Tamaro, known for its extreme vantage point, Monte Gambarogno, offering magnificent views over Lago Maggiore, and Sassariente Summit, a distinctive rock tooth with incomparable vistas.
For breathtaking panoramic views, Monte Tamaro and Sassariente Summit are exceptional. On clear days, both uniquely allow visitors to see both the lowest (Lake Maggiore) and highest (Dufourspitze) points in Switzerland. Monte Gambarogno also provides a wonderful view over the lower Lago Maggiore, the Gulf of Locarno, and Ascona.
Yes, Cardada Cimetta is an excellent choice for families and those seeking accessible views. It's easily reached by cable car from Orselina (just above Muralto), offering stunning scenery without an arduous climb. The Cardada Cable Car Mountain Station itself is considered family-friendly and even wheelchair accessible in parts.
The region offers a variety of hiking experiences. You can find pleasant trails through beech forests on Monte Gambarogno, ridge hikes on Monte Tamaro, and more challenging climbs to summits like Sassariente Summit. For specific routes, explore the Mountain Hikes around Muralto guide, which includes moderate and difficult options.
Experienced hikers seeking a challenge will find rewarding climbs. The ascent to Sassariente Summit, despite its moderate elevation, is considered a challenging climb due to its steepness and exposure, offering an incomparable viewpoint. The Mountain Hikes around Muralto guide also lists difficult routes like the 'Sassariente Summit Cross loop from Gordola'.
Many peaks are accessible via public transport. For instance, Cardada Cimetta is easily reached by a funicular from Locarno to Orselina, followed by a cable car. Monte Tamaro can be accessed by gondola from Rivera-Bironico. For Monte Gambarogno, a scenic approach is possible via post bus from Magadino.
On Monte Tamaro, you can visit the Santa Maria degli Angeli church, an architectural masterpiece designed by Mario Botta with paintings by Enzo Cucchi. At the base of the Cardada funicular, the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary in Orselina is a significant historical and religious site worth exploring.
Beyond hiking, the region offers a range of outdoor activities. You can find excellent mountain biking trails, such as the 'Cardada Bike Trail' or 'Trail Tra Brè e Val Rasa', detailed in the MTB Trails around Muralto guide. There are also running trails, including loops around Locarno and Lake Maggiore, which can be found in the Running Trails around Muralto guide.
The best time to visit is generally from spring through autumn (May to October) when the weather is mild, and trails are clear of snow. Summer offers the warmest temperatures, while spring and autumn provide pleasant hiking conditions and vibrant natural colors. Some cable cars, like Cardada, operate year-round, offering winter access to viewpoints.
Visitors consistently praise the spectacular panoramic views, especially the unique opportunity to see both the highest and lowest points of Switzerland from peaks like Monte Tamaro and Sassariente Summit. The diverse hiking experiences, from easy cable car access to challenging climbs, and the blend of natural beauty with cultural sites like the Santa Maria degli Angeli church, are also highly appreciated.
While slightly further, Monte Brè, near Lugano Lake, is known as one of Switzerland's sunniest mountain tops due to its southern exposure. It offers incredible views, including those of Monte Boglia, which straddles the Swiss-Italian border, providing a chance to experience both alpine landscapes.
