The rectangular shaped Neue Platz is the central city square of Klagenfurt, in the middle of which stands the Lindwurm as the city's landmark and heraldic animal. The square was created in the second half of the 16th century, when the estates had their new Renaissance city built south of the medieval one. They also commissioned the Lindwurm monument, which commemorates the beginnings of the city according to the founding legend: Ford of the “Klagen” = Klagenfurt. In 1593, the 124 hundredweight work made of chlorite slate is said to have been dragged from nearby Kreuzbergl to Neuer Platz by 300 young men dressed in white. In 1636 the sculpture was expanded into a lindworm fountain with a fountain trough, club-wielding Hercules and a Renaissance lattice. The well once supplied the city with drinking and fire-fighting water. For the 2008 European Football Championship, the square was redesigned according to the plans of the architect Boris Podrecca. Dark granite stone slabs form the elegant “carpet” for the lindworm fountain.

The most prominent natural monument is the Sörger Waterfall, a key feature of the Adventure Water Trail. This trail itself, starting from the Abenteuer Wasser Weg Liebenfels Trailhead, offers a pure nature experience along the Harterbach stream. Another notable natural feature is the View of Wörthersee from Zillhöhe, providing scenic vistas of Lake Wörthersee.
The Adventure Water Trail (Abenteuer Wasserweg) offers an immersive journey through unspoiled nature. You'll experience roaring water, secluded ponds, and the impressive flow of the Harterbach stream. A highlight is the Sörger Waterfall, where you can stand near its sparkling spray. The trail also features suspension bridges and paths along old mill ruins, blending natural beauty with historical context.
Yes, the Adventure Water Trail, which includes the Sörger Waterfall, is highly recommended for families. Visitors often mention that 'kids love this trail' due to its adventurous elements like suspension bridges and the natural beauty of the waterfalls and stream. The View of Wörthersee from Zillhöhe is also considered family-friendly.
The area around the Sörger Waterfall and the Adventure Water Trail is rich in biodiversity. You can find huge ferns, butterbur leaves, and other moisture-loving plants in the damp, primeval brook landscape. Keep an eye out for the mountain wagtail (Gebirgsstelze) near the stream and the dipper (Wasseramsel) darting over the water. Moss and fern species cover the rocks, and in spring, the rare scarlet elf cup fungus can be spotted on decaying wood.
Yes, the Adventure Water Trail along the Harterbach stream incorporates historical aspects. You'll encounter ruins of old mills and display boards that provide information about the unique habitat and share old stories of the gorge, including past searches for ore. The path itself runs partly over old mill paths (Mühlsteige).
Beyond exploring the natural monuments themselves, Liebenfels offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, including specific waterfall hikes that often incorporate the Sörger Waterfall. There are also road cycling routes and running trails in the wider Liebenfels area.
Visitors frequently praise the 'pure nature experience' offered by the Adventure Water Trail and the Sörger Waterfall. They appreciate the opportunity to 'discover the secret inhabitants of the gorge' and marvel at the beauty of the falling water. The combination of dynamic water landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and historical remnants creates a unique and enriching experience, often described as one of the most beautiful hikes in the region.
While the Lindwurm Fountain is a significant landmark and historical site, it is primarily a man-made monument located in Klagenfurt's Neuer Platz. It is recognized for its cultural and historical importance as the city's heraldic animal, rather than being a natural formation.
Yes, the View of Wörthersee from Zillhöhe provides a beautiful viewpoint near Klagenfurt with scenic vistas of Lake Wörthersee and the Pyramidenkogel. It's a popular spot for enjoying the landscape.
The Abenteuer Wasser Weg Liebenfels Trailhead is considered an optimal starting point for the Adventure Water Trail. It offers ample parking space, making it convenient for visitors to begin their hike along the Harterbach stream towards the Sörger Waterfall.
The natural monuments, especially the Adventure Water Trail and Sörger Waterfall, are best enjoyed during spring, summer, and early autumn.
