Geschichte Frauenfeld
Frauenfeld entstand als befestigte kleinstädtische Siedlung im 13. Jahrhundert auf dem Territorium von Erchingen. «Erichinga» war im 9. Jh. Königshof und Gerichtsstätte mit eigener Kirche und ging bereits in dieser Zeit als königliche Schenkung in den Besitz des Klosters Reichenau über.
Der Baubeginn am Turm des Frauenfelder Schlosses lässt sich aufgrund der heute noch erhaltenen Holzbalken auf die Zeit um 1230 datieren. Unmittelbar neben diesem herrschaftlichen Zentrum entstand im zweiten Drittel des 13. Jahrhunderts die Siedlung, deren Name 1246 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wird. Bereits 1286 ist Frauenfeld als Stadt bezeugt. Die Vogtei über den reichenauischen Besitz liegt in dieser Zeit bei den Habsburgern, die diese Funktion 1264 von den Kyburgern geerbt haben dürften.
Nachdem 1460 die Eidgenossen den Thurgau erobert hatten, machten sie Frauenfeld schrittweise zum Verwaltungszentrum der Landgrafschaft. Bereits um 1500 wurde Frauenfeld erstmals Sitzungsort der eidgenössischen Tagsatzung. Der eidgenössische Landvogt residierte ab 1532 im Schloss Frauenfeld.
Zwischen 1712 und 1798 tagte die Tagsatzung regelmässig in Frauenfeld. Von dieser Zeit zeugen heute noch die prächtigen Gesandtschaftshäuser der Tagsatzungsorte und das 1791–1793 erbaute Rathaus mit seinem repräsentativen Tagsatzungssaal, in dem heute u.a. der Grosse Rat des Kantons Thurgau tagt. Die Selbständigkeit des Thurgaus, dessen Kantonshauptort Frauenfeld von 1798 an war, löste die alten Handels- und Gewerbebeschränkungen und machte die Bahn frei für eine im 19. und in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts äusserst erfolgreiche Industrialisierung. Viele Betriebe in den Bereichen der Nahrungsmittel- und Lederverarbeitung, der Textil-, Metall- und chemischen Industrie liessen sich vornehmlich entlang der schon im Mittelalter genutzten Murgkanäle nieder.
Heute sind viele Zeugen einstiger Pioniere der Industrialisierung (Walzmühle, Eisenwerk) in vorbildlicher Weise zu Wohn- und Kulturzwecken umgenutzt worden. Frauenfeld zieht aber weiterhin – gerade wegen des hohen Standards in seinen Wohn- und Lebensräumen – technologisch innovative Unternehmen und wichtige Dienstleistungsbetriebe an und bleibt so mit seinem vielfältigen geschichtlichen Erbe ein offenes und zukunftsgerichtetes Gemeinwesen.
