Dunin Oak

Highlight • Natural Monument

It is a remnant of the Ladzka Forest and one of several monumental oaks located in these areas. This tree used to have a more slender shape, but as a result of lightning strikes it lost several branches and its crown changed slightly. Dunin's age is estimated at around 400 years. The oak has been a natural monument since 2001, but for centuries it has been admired by local residents and tourists visiting this region of Poland.
The name Dunin was given to it by Janusz Korbel in honor of the Belarusian poet and playwright Wincenty Dunin Marcinkiewicz. Interestingly, this pedunculate oak was previously called the Guardian of the Białowieża Forest.
In 2021, the ancient oak won the Polish edition of the Tree of the Year competition organized by the Gaja Club, thus securing its participation in the European competition. In 2022, it became the European Tree of the Year.

The "Cieliczański Forest" reserve, within the Forest District's boundaries, covers an area of 239.98 hectares. Established in 1990, it was established to protect and preserve a fragment of the Knyszyńska Forest with numerous valuable forest communities of natural character. These communities are represented primarily by oak-hornbeam forests (with the rare wych elm in our forests), mixed coniferous forests, and alder forests. Ash-alder riparian forests are also well-preserved within the reserve's boundaries. The reserve is characterized by a great wealth and diversity of plant cover. It occupies an area rich in springs and seeps that form watercourses draining into the Supraśl River.

Chomontowszczyzna Reserve
The reserve was established (…) on August 10, 1999. The area of the reserve is 234.42 ha. The purpose of its creation was to preserve, for scientific and didactic reasons, a fragment of the Knyszyn Forest, characterized by a high degree of naturalness, constituting the mainstay of a free-living bison herd. The protection of forest meadows and stream valleys overgrown with riparian forests, alder forests and moist oak-hornbeam forests, with numerous species of protected and rare plants, is carried out here.(…) Within the reserve, eight habitat types of forest have been distinguished, of which mixed swamp forest habitats predominate - 64.6% . The share of fresh forest habitats is significant - 13.0% of the area and moist forest - 12.3%. (…) This area is characterized by floristic richness and numerous species of protected and rare plants. The flora of the Chomontowszczyzna reserve includes over 250 species of vascular plants. During the work on the "Protection plan of the reserve" in 2004, the presence of 220 species of plants was found, including 12 species of trees, 12 species of shrubs, 153 species of herbs, 15 horsetails, clubmoss and ferns, and 28 species of bryophytes. Some swamp species, whose habitats are constantly shrinking as a result of lowering groundwater, also deserve special protection.

One of the two reservoirs on Świnobródka near Sokół.

Not far downstream, there is an old, crumbling bridge.

An old, picturesque tree. From the Przybudki side you have to drive 200 meters on gravel.

In 2023, the reservoir underwent a thorough reconstruction. Unfortunately, L.P. they did not take care of the tourist infrastructure. There is not a single bench. As with most such reservoirs in the Białystok area.
