It is laboriously done on foot uphill, I don't wear wheels, it is classified as S3 but must be tackled by expert and protected bikers!

Flowing and fun descent, recommended.

The trail is a lot of fun as it is a nice mix of technical (easy) and flow for a not exaggerated length. Plus there are a handful of really nice artificial jumps. Too bad that the vegetation (especially the brambles in summer ...) does not allow you to fully enjoy it and above all in safety.

I’m sorry for @MaDDin, but this part of Italy is not that Montemurlo. This is “Monte Murlo” and it’s part of Liguria region and not Tuscany. Be more careful when you post comment like this.

Trail to be traveled exclusively downhill to fully enjoy even with the front. In some sections the visibility is reduced due to the presence of ferns.

Ameglia offers a rich network of mountain biking trails and cycling routes, particularly within the Montemarcello-Magra Regional Natural Park. You'll find diverse terrain where the Magra river meets the Ligurian Sea, bordering Tuscany, with coastal paths, riverine landscapes, and routes through charming medieval villages. The area provides options for various skill levels, from challenging mountain bike descents to more relaxed touring routes.
Yes, Ameglia is known for its challenging trails. For instance, the Menhir Trail is highly technical and recommended for experienced mountain bikers with full MTB and protective gear. Another demanding option is the Barattini Volpiglione Trail, suitable for enduro or freeride bikes, featuring hairpin bends, jumps, and steep, rocky sections.
For intermediate riders, the Gratta e Vinci Trail is a great choice. It's designed for downhill riding, offering a mix of technical and flow sections, including artificial jumps. The S3 Monte Murlo Trail also provides a flowing and fun descent suitable for intermediate skill levels.
Cyclists can experience routes that offer panoramic views of the Magra river, the Apuan Alps, and the Gulf of Poets. The landscape includes sandy beaches to the east and rocky cliffs to the west, all within a protected natural park. Trails often pass through hills and Mediterranean scrub, providing varied and scenic backdrops.
The region's Mediterranean climate generally makes spring and autumn ideal for cycling, offering pleasant temperatures and less extreme weather. Summer can be warm, but early mornings or late afternoons are still enjoyable. Winter offers milder conditions compared to more northern regions, making it possible to cycle year-round, though some trails might be affected by rain.
While many mountain bike trails are geared towards intermediate to advanced riders, the broader Ameglia region offers diverse terrain that includes easier coastal rides and routes through villages. These provide less challenging options for families or beginners looking for a more relaxed cycling experience away from technical descents. Look for routes with lower elevation gain and smoother surfaces.
Beyond mountain biking, Ameglia offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can explore numerous hiking trails, such as the 'Montemarcello to Monte Murlo Loop' or the 'Bocca di Magra, Montemarcello e Punta Bianca – loop tour'. For road cyclists, there are extensive routes like the 'Bridge over the Magra River – Montemarcello Village loop'. Find more options on the MTB Trails around Ameglia, Hiking around Ameglia, and Road Cycling Routes around Ameglia guide pages.
Visitors frequently praise the diverse terrain and scenery, from coastal views to riverine landscapes and medieval villages. The variety of trails catering to different skill levels is also highly appreciated. Many enjoy the flowing descents and technical sections, with specific trails like S3 Monte Murlo Trail being described as 'flowing and fun'.
Yes, the cycling routes often pass through charming medieval villages, offering glimpses into the region's history. Some trails, like the 'Ameglia var Snake' mentioned in regional research, pass historical structures such as the Lazzaretto. The Castello di Moneta Trail also offers a beautiful view of the Marina di Carrara and the coast, with the historic castle nearby.
The length of bike trails in Ameglia varies significantly. Some individual trail segments, like 'Ameglia var Snake' or 'Ameglia Var Cinghiale' (from regional research), can offer descents of 2-3 km. However, many routes combine multiple segments or form longer loops. For example, the 'View of the Gulf of La Spezia – Lerici Promenade and Harbor loop from Tellaro' is nearly 30 km, and the 'Scanizagatti MTB Trail – Barattini Volpiglione Trail loop from Luni' is about 28 km.
While specific 'hidden gems' are not explicitly highlighted, the broader Lerici-Ameglia Trail Area encompasses several trails beyond the most popular ones. Exploring routes within the Montemarcello-Magra Regional Natural Park often leads to less frequented paths, especially outside peak season. The Komoot community's high rating for the area suggests many well-regarded, yet perhaps not overly crowded, options.
