The Ribeira de Seixe, which takes its name from the Arabic sayh, "torrent", draws the natural border between the Alentejo and the Algarve, running serenely until it meets the Atlantic at Odeceixe Beach. Between the village and the sea, the valley is simply magical: green banks, open views and a perfect environment for cycling. You can even go up the river by canoe, observe birds (and who knows, an otter) or alternate between dips in the calm river and the ocean. This is one of those places that stay in your memory.

Breathtaking views of the river flowing into the sea.

The north access via the stairs works well. The middle exit via stairs and rope was destroyed in the lower section by mud and landslide on September 13, 2025. It was impossible for us to ascend. Due to a lack of accessible alternatives, we returned via the north entrance and continued south along the signposted cliff path above.

The Rio Seixe looks beautiful as it approaches the town of Odeceixe and finally flows into the sea.

Beja's natural monuments offer a diverse range of features. You can find extensive dunes and coastal cliffs along the Dunes and Cliffs of the Costa Vicentina, wild and unspoiled sandy beaches like Malhão Beach, and unique rock formations such as Stork Rock. Inland, the Guadiana Valley Natural Park features rolling plains and hidden valleys, while the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park presents mountainous landscapes with diverse vegetation.
Yes, the Gruta do Escoural (Escoural Cave) is a remarkable natural monument with significant archaeological importance. It is the only known site of Paleolithic cave art in Portugal, featuring engravings and paintings dating back tens of thousands of years. The cave also served as a Neanderthal shelter and a Neolithic burial site, offering a profound connection to ancient human history.
For breathtaking panoramic views, visit the Dunes and Cliffs of the Costa Vicentina, which offer expansive vistas of the Atlantic coast. The Serra de São Mamede Natural Park also provides exceptional panoramic views from its highest points, reaching 1025 meters, due to its unexpected mountainous landscape within the generally flat Alentejo region.
Beja's natural monuments are rich in wildlife. The Guadiana Valley Natural Park is a haven for birds, including the rare black stork. The Serra de São Mamede Natural Park is crucial for various bird species, especially birds of prey like vultures, kites, and the Bonelli's eagle. It also provides refuge for otters and the Iberian lynx. Along the coast, particularly around Zambujeira do Mar Beach, you can observe storks nesting on the cliffs.
Yes, Beja offers numerous hiking opportunities. The Guadiana Valley Natural Park has scenic paths along the tranquil Guadiana River. The Serra de São Mamede Natural Park provides many trails for exploring its rugged terrain. Additionally, the Rota Vicentina Coastal Trail offers a stunning multi-day hiking experience along the west coast, with sections accessible for shorter walks. You can find more hiking options in the Waterfall hikes in Beja guide.
Beyond hiking, you can enjoy various outdoor activities. Cycling is popular, with routes like the Serpa MTB Trail P2 and circular routes around Serpa. Gravel biking is also an option, with longer routes such as the Milfontes – Costa Vicentina Natural Park loop. Explore more cycling options in the Cycling in Beja guide and Gravel biking in Beja guide.
The best time to visit Beja's natural monuments generally depends on your preferred activity. Spring (March to May) is ideal for observing flora and birdlife, with pleasant temperatures for hiking. Autumn (September to November) also offers good conditions for outdoor activities. Summer can be very hot, especially inland, but is perfect for enjoying the coastal beaches like Malhão Beach and Carraca Beach.
Many of Beja's natural monuments offer experiences suitable for families. Coastal areas with wide sandy beaches, such as Malhão Beach, are great for children. While specific 'family-friendly' categories aren't always explicit, many trails within the natural parks can be adapted for shorter, easier walks. Always check the difficulty and length of a trail before heading out with children.
Generally, dogs are permitted on many trails and in natural areas in Beja, especially if kept on a leash. However, specific rules can vary by protected area or individual monument. It's always advisable to check local regulations for each specific location you plan to visit, particularly regarding sensitive wildlife habitats or designated bathing areas on beaches.
When exploring Beja's natural monuments, wear comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes, especially if you plan to tackle trails with varied terrain. Layered clothing is recommended as temperatures can change throughout the day. Don't forget sun protection, including a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, particularly during warmer months or when on coastal trails. Bring plenty of water, especially for longer excursions.
While popular spots like Malhão Beach can attract visitors, many areas within the larger natural parks, such as the Guadiana Valley Natural Park and Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, offer opportunities for solitude. Exploring less-traveled paths or visiting during the off-season can lead you to quieter, equally stunning natural spots. The Praia dos Alterinhos and Waterfall, for example, offers a unique combination of beach and waterfall that might be less frequented than the main coastal beaches.
Parking is generally available at or near the main access points for most natural monuments and trailheads. However, public transport options to more remote natural monuments can be limited. For places like the Gruta do Escoural, guided tours often include transport or provide clear directions for access. For coastal areas, towns like Zambujeira do Mar offer better public transport links to nearby beaches. Planning your journey in advance is recommended.
