Great waterfall in a grotto with a beautiful botanical garden on the way up. Everything very well maintained. Rain protection is highly recommended in the grotto. Offered rain capes for 3,- EUR are good and can also be used for further hikes in the rain ☔️.

The flowering plants on the terrace are also lovingly tended, making it a pleasant place to spend time. Sand lizards can also be observed here.

The prices for drinks and panini sandwiches are really fair. The toilets are clean and free. The outdoor seating/picnic area has a nice view. You can order your drinks etc. in the souvenir shop (self-service)

More information about opening times etc. can be found here: https://www.cascata-varone.com/de/ Make sure you take a rain jacket with you... no one comes out dry here 😜😂! We were there at the end of October and were glad to have a change of clothes in the car 😉. Definitely a welcome refreshment in the summer ☀️

Well, I've seen more spectacular things for €7. What a pity. Remember your rain jackets, otherwise it'll be another €2.50.

The Brentonico area offers significant historical and archaeological sites. The Colombo Cave, located above Sano, is an important archaeological site where excavations revealed remnants of fireplaces, tombs, pottery fragments, and tools from the Bell-Beaker culture (2,800 to 2,200 BC). For more recent history, the Military Tunnels of Corno della Paura are World War I remnants, offering a glimpse into historical fortifications and panoramic views. Additionally, the Busoni Tunnels and Artillery Positions are 300-meter-long galleries that served as gun emplacements during World War I.
Yes, the Brentonico region is known for its historical quarries. The Monte Giovo Quarries in Castione are historically significant, known since the 16th century for high-quality polychrome marbles used in important architectural works like the high altar of Trento Cathedral. Another notable site is The Statuary Stone Quarries of Vastrè, where oolite stone was extracted for portals, fountains, and statues, including those in Trento and Padua. These quarries were also used as protection during wartime.
While traditional karstic caves are less common directly in Brentonico, the nearby Parco Grotta Cascata Varone offers a unique natural experience. This natural park features a spectacular waterfall flowing through various grottoes, enhanced by lighting and walkways. You can visit the Varone Waterfall and Botanical Garden or the Waterfall and Grotto at Parco Grotta Cascata Varone for an impressive natural spectacle.

It features a waterfall flowing through grottoes with accessible walkways and lighting, making it an engaging experience for all ages. The site also includes a botanical garden. Some cave-like formations in the area offer impressive views. For instance, the Cave with a View of Torbole and Nago provides a grandiose perspective of the Sarca valley from a narrow rocky edge. The Military Tunnels of Corno della Paura and the Busoni Tunnels and Artillery Positions also offer panoramic views of the Lagarina valley.
The Brentonico plateau, known as the 'Botanical Garden of Europe,' offers numerous panoramic routes for various outdoor activities. You can explore gravel biking routes, enjoy cycling tours, or tackle challenging MTB trails. These routes often pass through scenic landscapes, complementing a visit to the historical and natural cave sites.
The Brentonico plateau is known for its rich flora, making spring and summer ideal for enjoying both the natural beauty and the cave sites. The Parco Grotta Cascata Varone can be a refreshing visit in summer. For hiking and exploring the historical sites, the milder temperatures of spring and autumn are also very pleasant. Winter visits might offer a different, quieter experience, but some outdoor routes could be affected by snow.
For general visits to sites like the Colombo Cave, Monte Giovo Quarries, or the Military Tunnels of Corno della Paura, specific caving permits are typically not required, as these are often accessible historical or archaeological sites. However, the Parco Grotta Cascata Varone is a private natural park and requires an entrance fee. Always check local regulations or official websites for any specific access requirements or fees before your visit.
Visitors particularly enjoy the unique blend of history and nature. The archaeological significance of sites like Colombo Cave and the historical depth of the Monte Giovo Quarries are highly appreciated. The immersive experience of the Varone Waterfall, with its grottoes and lighting effects, is also a favorite. Many find the historical military tunnels, such as the Busoni Tunnels, fascinating for their glimpse into World War I history and the panoramic views they offer.
While specific public transport routes directly to every cave entrance might be limited, Brentonico itself is accessible. From Brentonico, you may need to rely on local bus services or a combination of public transport and short walks to reach sites like the Colombo Cave (near Sano) or the Monte Giovo Quarries (in Castione). For the Parco Grotta Cascata Varone, which is closer to Riva del Garda, public transport options from larger towns in the Trentino area are generally more frequent. It's advisable to check local bus schedules for the most up-to-date information.
Beyond the historical quarries, the Brentonico area, situated between Lake Garda and Vallagarina, presents a diverse geological landscape. The oolite stone found in The Statuary Stone Quarries of Vastrè is a unique geological material. The formation of the Varone Waterfall, where water has carved through rock to create grottoes, is another impressive natural geological process to observe.
