The water is calm compared to the Baltic Sea, and we gaze at the lake. While it's surrounded by trees, the first of them are already showing their autumn colors. We sit down for a short break on the lakeside terrace. A lovely moment. We continue on, back along the main path, catching glimpses of the lake through the trees. At a bathing area, there's a nice place to sit, and the sunlight sparkles on the water like fireworks. A little further on, a multitude of swans greet us. https://youtu.be/EoS5sxZcnGA

The lake is located south of the seaside resort of Ahlbeck in the municipality of Korswandt. It is around 1.4 kilometers long, 0.45 km wide and has an average depth of 4.1 meters. The lake was formed in the last ice age. The shore offers many seabirds an ideal breeding and resting area. The body of water is almost completely surrounded by beech forest. Its attractive scenic surroundings make it an attraction for tourism. A signposted cycling and hiking trail leads around the lake. Duke Barnim I donated the lake and the village of Korswandt to the Stolpe Monastery in 1243. When the border dispute between the monastery and Reimar von Neuenkirchen was settled, the lake remained with the monastery. On the map of the Swedish National Survey from the end of the 17th century and the Schmetttauschen map from 1780, the lake extended over a larger area than in the present and also enclosed the Black Heart to the southeast. The name Wolgast could have been an Old Polabian personal name Voligost, the second part of the name gość meaning guest, also friend. The name therefore refers to someone who has a bigger/better friend. Wilhelm Ferdinand Gadebusch also assumed “big” as the meaning of the first syllable (“woly”), but “gast” is said to be interpreted as “thicket” or “grove,” from which he derived “large grove.”
