Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut (Marangu Route, Kilimanjaro National Park)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The "Coca-Cola Route" Marangu is the easiest of all Kilimanjaro routes, is 69 kilometers long and overcomes 4,410 meters in altitude.
Marangu is a demanding mountain trekking route of at least five days, on which, compared to other routes, the percentage of mountain tourists gives up - not least because the Marangu route is often underestimated.
It is therefore absolutely advisable to take an acclimatization day (6-day route) at Horombo Hut (3,725 m). B. during the day to visit the Zebra Rocks (approx. 4,000 m).
The Marangu route, like all other routes, should be tackled with the necessary respect and proper preparation training. No matter which route you choose, the altitude remains - and thus the crux of every Kilimanjaro climb. Be sure to walk slowly from day 1 and don't smile at the repetitive “Pole Pole” (slow, slow) of your guide and the passing porters. You know what you're talking about.

Barafu Camp, Kilimanjaro National Park

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Last camp before the summit. However, there is often a stormy wind blowing here, which quite stirs up the dust and blows into the tents. After our return from the summit, everything in the tent was covered with a thin layer of dust.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Our plan was to reach Mandara hut but we decided to go beyond of our trip because we arrived at Mandara hut early. On the way we had a chance to saw another vegetation zone, moorland vegetation where Erica species, tussock grasses, Everlast flowers, are common. From Mandara 2720m to Horombo 3720m it's 11km and it was challenging thus why we didn't complete this trip as we planned at least we tried our best, only 4km left to Horombo hut. We decided to go back to Marangu gate.

Also called Big Tree Camp because of the large, partially fallen trees in the camp. Here you can sleep again in pleasant night temperatures, but it gets significantly cooler a little higher up.

Very nice camp in the middle of the rainforest. At night you have an incredible backdrop of noise, monkeys, birds, etc. Lots of animals around, if you are sensitive you should bring earplugs

Shira 2 is no longer so beautiful, quite a lot of rocks and also quite drafty. At night, when the weather is clear, you can see Moshi and Mount Meru

The first camp is not the most exciting compared to the later camps, but does it's job well. The nights there are warm contarry to later camps.
