August 12, 2026, Gorge of Aposelemi

A beautiful hike. I started from Gouves, first just walked along the road. Flat with a good pace towards the gorge. After I was under the 2 highway bridges, the gorge began. It is a (long since) dried-up riverbed with large rock formations interspersed with pebbles. The first 1.5 kilometers are mainly scrambling. Quite challenging, but very fun. Then a hiking trail begins. This continues nicely for 2 kilometers to the end (or beginning) of the gorge, Then you are out, but there is still a serious climb of almost 2 kilometers with an average gradient of 12%. That hurts! Then a beautiful 5-kilometer descent on the road to Gouves. Finished at the little church in Gouves with a delicious Greek coffee.

The door is simply closed, so it's definitely worth taking a look inside the small chapel (just don't look behind the door😕).

Beautiful gorge. You can easily get close to the gorge by bus on the main road. Then walk for about 20 minutes to the end of the riverbed, which is the beginning of the gorge. Then you have to scramble over stones in the riverbed. It goes slowly. It is best to do it with light outdoor shoes.

No longer an insider tip, but not overcrowded either, well worth it.

The beach with small pebbles and sand is surprisingly long, with a rocky part in the middle. In the eastern part there are some caves (one of which is apparently even inhabited) that provide shade. The water is crystal clear and it quickly gets deep near the rock walls. There are no trees, no vegetation and no tavern. The rocks have the shape of sculptures from another time, here you feel like you are on another planet - hence the name Dragon Bay.

To reach Dragon Bay you have to go to Lendas - located on the Libyan Sea. To do this you have to cross the Asterousia Mountains - 500 meters up and then back down again - endless switchbacks. Once you arrive in Lendas you have to drive/walk a few kilometers on a gravel road to the entrance to the Trachoulas Gorge. Then comes the descent through the gorge, 100 meters in altitude - not really complicated, but slippery because of the rubble. You have to be willing and able to do that. But one thing is also clear: it rarely gets busy here!
