An amazing viewpoint of the valley below on the far edge of a rocky promontory before a sheer drop. It's very exposed so a head for heights is beneficial, but there are steel cables to hold on to on all the sections that run near the edges. There's a small stone plaque marking the height and a summit box with a summit register inside to record your climb. This viewpoint isn't technically the peak of Kopitnik, that's a few meters to the west, in the middle of a heavily wooded plateau. If you want to reach this viewpoint specifically, you have to follow the signs for 'VRH'. The route up is very, very secluded, and in some places not clear. I didn't see a single person the entire journey, until I descended back into Rimske Toplice. I planned my own route to the peak with Komoot, and a handful of the routes shown on the Komoot map either didn't exist, weren't accurate, or were almost impossible to follow. I'd recommend following one of the routes suggested by the Laško tourist information board. You can find a couple of these on their website.

Konj is a 1803 m high peak located between Velika Planina and Presedljaj. From the top, we have a beautiful view of the highest peaks of the Kamniška Savinja Alps and Rzenik and its almost vertical north face. The registration box (also stamp) is not located at the top of Konje, but a little lower in the direction of Presedljaj. It is separated by a short steep descent along a protected climbing route.

Great view, because a lot of deforestation is taking place (unfortunately the area is currently pretty devastated by the harvester and the paths are muddy)

The harvester has left some scars on the landscape, but now you have a fantastic view

The first time I was a little tired, but I didn't make it to the top, but the second time it was better :)

Grmada is a popular hiking objective in the Celje region. Its summit provides beautiful views across the Posavje Hills, Celje and the Savinjska Valley, while Slovenia's great mountain ranges are visible in the distance on clear days. To the south east, you'll find the Pečovnik hut, a lovely wooden hut built by members of the Grmada Celje mountaineering club.

The Savinjska region, particularly within the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, offers a variety of impressive peaks. Highlights include Grintovec, the highest peak in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, known for its challenging routes and panoramic views. Skuta is notable for hosting the easternmost glacier in the Alps, while Velika Planina offers a unique high-mountain plateau with a traditional herdsmen's village. Other significant peaks are Ojstrica, Brana, Carinthia Mount Rinka, and Smrekovec, a mountain of volcanic origin with unique flora.
Yes, Savinjska offers options for families. Velika Planina is particularly family-friendly, accessible by cable car and chairlift, offering easy walks, unique cultural experiences, and local dairy products. The House on Mrzlice is also categorized as family-friendly.
The region is rich in natural beauty. From Raduha Peak, you can enjoy extensive views including distant peaks like Triglav and Großglockner. Lisca Summit offers views of Pohorje, Donačka gora, and the Julian Alps. The Logar Valley, encircled by peaks like Ojstrica and the Rinkas, is a protected landscape park with the impressive Rinka Waterfall. Smrekovec mountain, due to its volcanic origin, boasts unique plant life not found elsewhere in the region.
Velika Planina is home to one of Europe's few surviving traditional high-mountain herdsmen's villages, complete with characteristic shingled huts and the Preskar Museum. Lisca Summit has a long history, with Roman-era connections and a church from the late 17th century near its summit. The modern mountain shelter on Skuta also offers a unique overnight experience.
Beyond hiking and mountaineering, the Savinjska region offers diverse outdoor activities. You can explore various routes for hiking, cycling, and mountain biking. For hiking, consider routes like the Rundwanderung zu den Moorseen von Lovrenc or the Velika Planina loop. Cycling enthusiasts can try the Solčava Panoramic Road or the Rinka Waterfall – Logar Valley loop. Mountain bikers have options such as the View of Logar Valley loop or the Mozirska Cottage loop. Find more details on these activities in the Hiking in Savinjska, Cycling in Savinjska, and MTB Trails in Savinjska guides.
The best time to visit the Savinjska mountains for hiking generally spans from late spring to early autumn (June to October). During this period, the weather is typically more stable, and trails are clear of snow, making high-altitude routes more accessible. Some mountain huts, like Kamniška Koča Mountain Hut, are open daily during the expanded summer season.
Absolutely. Grintovec, as the highest peak in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, offers challenging routes, especially on its northern face. Skuta is considered physically and technically demanding, suited for experienced hikers comfortable with exposed and rocky terrain. Konj Peak is also categorized as challenging for climbing. The northwest face of Raduha presents a dramatic, steep wall attractive to alpinists, and Ojstrica offers challenging trails with precipitous sections along the ridge.
Visitors frequently praise the stunning panoramic views from summits like Raduha Peak and Grmada Summit, which can extend to distant ranges like the Julian Alps and even Croatian peaks on clear days. The unique cultural experience of Velika Planina's herdsmen's village and the diverse terrain for hiking and biking are also highly appreciated. The region's blend of challenging alpine experiences and natural beauty receives strong community engagement, with many photos and upvotes shared.
Several mountain huts offer accommodation and refreshments. Kamniška Koča Mountain Hut is located just below the Kamniški saddle and has a winter room. A modern, award-winning mountain shelter is available on Skuta. Smrekovec also has a mountain hut providing meals and accommodation. For Velika Planina, some of the traditional shingled huts are available for visitors to experience overnight stays.
While popular peaks attract many, exploring areas like Smrekovec can offer a quieter experience. Its rounded, overgrown peaks provide a different hiking experience compared to the more rugged limestone mountains. Additionally, seeking out trails during off-peak hours or weekdays can help avoid crowds on more popular routes.
The region boasts several unique geological features. Skuta is home to the easternmost glacier in the Alps. Velika Planina features interesting karst phenomena. Raduha has the nearby Snežna jama (Snow Cave), Slovenia's highest tourist cave, known for its impressive ice formations. Smrekovec stands out due to its volcanic origin and non-limestone bedrock, fostering unique plant life.
Access to some areas, like Velika Planina, is facilitated by public transport options such as a cable car and chairlift. For other trailheads, public transport might be less direct, often requiring a combination of buses and then walking or arranging local transfers. It's advisable to check local transport schedules for specific starting points.
