It is not clear to me why a picture of the bishopric is on the title picture - the castle ruins offer enough corners worth seeing of their own. Definitely worth a visit. A guided tour is also offered, giving access to some rooms, e.g. the chapel.

An interesting old ruined castle, also called a castle. Unfortunately it burned down towards the end of the 18th century and was never rebuilt. As soon as you are near Sion, the castle catches your eye, so the castle hill is dominant. From the castle you have a good view of Sion and the bishopric.

Beautiful from near and far, unfortunately closed from November to March, but still worth a walk up and to the garden.

Tourbillon Castle, Sion / Sitten Tourbillon Castle is a castle that has been preserved as a ruin and is located on the hill of the same name, northeast of the old town of Sion in the Swiss canton of Valais. Opposite the castle, the basilica of Valeria is enthroned on another elevation. Tourbillon was built by Bishop Bonifatius Challant at the end of the 13th century. The two hills and their buildings tower above the city by far and thus shape the cityscape and landscape. In 1788 the castle was destroyed by the great city fire. Tourbillon has been classified as a historical monument since 1907 and has been listed in the inventory of protected monuments of national importance in accordance with the Hague Conventions since 1977. Archaeological excavations show that the hill was settled as early as the 5th millennium BC. In the Middle Ages it served as a sentry during wartime. This is also indicated by the remains of a donjon, which is located under the chapel built in the 15th century. Furthermore, a document lists around 1270 names of people who should have occupied the watchtower on the hill in the event of war. Bishop Bonifatius Challant initiated the construction of the castle in its current dimensions in 1297. Dendrochronological dating, however, showed that large parts of the complex were only built around 1307. The city of Sion was to be protected by the rebellious nobility under Peter IV von Turn. The two most prominent castles in Sitten are Basilica of Valère and Tourbillon Castle. Both are perched on hills overlooking the city, offering significant historical value and panoramic views. Valère is a well-preserved fortified church housing one of the world's oldest playable pipe organs, while Tourbillon is a dramatic 13th-century ruin with outstanding vistas.
Yes, exploring the castles in Sitten can be a family-friendly activity. The climb to Basilica of Valère is generally manageable, and the historical sites offer an engaging experience for all ages. The city of Sion itself is listed as family-friendly, providing a good base for your visit.
From both Basilica of Valère and Tourbillon Castle, you can expect breathtaking panoramic views. These include sweeping vistas of Sitten (Sion) city, the surrounding vineyards, and the majestic Alps. The elevated positions of these castles make them excellent viewpoints.
The best time to visit the castles in Sitten is generally during the spring, summer, and early autumn months (April to October) when the weather is milder and the views are clear. This allows for comfortable climbing and exploration of the outdoor ruins and paths. Winter visits are possible, but paths might be icy, and some facilities could have reduced hours.
The climb to Tourbillon Castle is described as steep and rocky. While it requires some effort, the panoramic views over Sitten, the vineyards, and the Alps are considered well worth the exertion. It's an intermediate-level ascent, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
Beyond the two main castles, Sitten offers other historical sites. Majorie Castle and Vidomnat Castle, both dating from the 12th or 13th century, now house the Valais Art Museum (Le Musée d'art du Valais). These provide an opportunity to explore regional art within historical settings.

There are also road cycling routes available, such as the 'Châteaux de Sion et Environs en boucle', detailed in the Road Cycling Routes in Sitten guide.
Tourbillon Castle offers free entry, allowing visitors to explore its interesting details and layout without a ticket. This makes it an accessible historical site for everyone.
The Basilica of Valère is unique for several reasons. It is an exceptionally well-preserved fortified church dating back to the 11th century. Inside, it houses one of the world's oldest playable pipe organs, dating to around 1435, making it a significant cultural treasure. It also contains religious artworks and old murals.
The castles are located on two hills directly above the city of Sitten (Sion). You can reach them by walking from the city center. While there is no direct public transport to the very top of the hills, the city itself is well-connected. Be prepared for a climb to reach the castle entrances.
While specific events vary, the Basilica of Valère occasionally hosts concerts featuring its historic pipe organ. Additionally, the museum within the Basilica offers free admission on the first Sunday of every month, providing an opportunity to explore its collections.
Sitten's castles, particularly Valère and Tourbillon, are central to the city's 7,000-year history. Basilica of Valère served as a fortified church and religious center, while Tourbillon Castle was built as a bishop's residence and a defensive stronghold. They represent centuries of ecclesiastical and political power in the Valais region, shaping the cityscape and offering insights into medieval life.
