The lake is located about one kilometer southwest of Mühlhausen, south of the Schwanenteich, on the Thomaswiese. To the south is the Hofgut Weidensee estate. The Felchtaer Bach, which flows into the Unstrut, originates from the Thomasteich. The Thomasteich was excavated in 1607 in the spring area of a stream. When the Thomasquelle emerged in 1901 on a small hill northeast of the pond, it was additionally reinforced with karst water. Therefore, fir sprigs can occasionally be seen in the lake water today. The Thomasteich has been designated a nature monument and is owned by the Mühlhausen Anglerverein (anglers' association).
