The Zwinger was an important part of Nordhausen's city fortifications and secured the eastern entrance to the city. It was connected to the inner Töpfertor by two walls. The gun tower was built in 1487 and had a diameter of 20 meters and 2.5 meter thick walls with loopholes. The Zwinger was demolished in the middle of the 19th century. The lower part of the tower was rediscovered during roadworks in 1993 and has been open to visitors since 1994. On the Day of the Open Monument in 1993, the opportunity arose for the first time in over 100 years to view the lower, preserved part of the Zwinger. (Source: Nordhausen-Wiki)

an underground vault which belongs to the remains of the city fortifications of Nordhausen from the year 1487. The remains of the Zwinger in the Töpferstrasse are to the south-east of the theatre. The location is marked externally by a conspicuous glass structure.

Years ago, the karst site was removed from the karst hiking trail and this route was diverted because an owl lived above the Schwinde. Caves in the plaster can be seen very clearly, but I have never spotted an owl.

We walked a lap today, this cave should be the highlight... We just couldn't find it :( we were standing exactly on the spot. We didn't really discover a path either. Maybe better luck next time ^^

The so-called horse stable is a natural attraction. It is a 20 meter long and 10 meter deep crevice in the immediate vicinity of the Kattsteingipfel. According to legend, a robber by the name of Always Sober was supposed to have lived there. The gap is freely accessible, but entering it is not safe and should not be done alone or with safety!

Please be careful, the path is littered with fallen trees and the cave is not secured! ☝️
