The story of the glory of Lage is fascinating. You should know it. The "One-Legged Man's Pants" is funny.

Hello Kapparalf, what an interesting story; I am Marc Siemelink from Diepenveen in the Netherlands and according to a cousin the origin of the Siemelink family lies at this farm / fort Symoninck. Do you know or have any references or other information about this?

(The location of the castle was about 100m southeast of the church - so not exactly accurate here) History: The Toerne family appears in the documents from 1189 and from 1223 among the castle guards of Bentheim Castle. It is generally assumed that their original seat was south of the church in Uelsen, but this does not appear in the sources or be located more precisely. In 1399, Count Bern zu Bentheim allowed Hinrik van den Toerne to build and construct a dwelling and fortress for the Symoninck heir. Text copied (and more info) stolen from: https://www.ebidat.de/cgi-bin/ebidat.pl?id=5780 Photo and much info comes from the Uelsen Local History Museum: https://www.heimatverein-uelsen.de/uelser-geschichte/burgmannshof-in-uelsen/

Around Uelsen, you'll primarily discover historical castle sites, ruins, and ringforts rather than grand, intact structures. These locations offer a glimpse into the region's medieval history and past fortifications. Examples include the historical seat of the Toerne family and the site of Burg Dinkelrode, which are now archaeological sites, and the ivy-covered Lage Castle Ruins.
While Uelsen itself features historical castle presences, for a well-preserved and impressive castle experience, Bentheim Castle is highly recommended. Located nearby in Bad Bentheim, it's considered one of the oldest and most impressive castles in northwestern Germany, with many areas open to the public year-round, including a knight's hall and a powder tower offering panoramic views.
The Lage Castle Ruins are privately owned and generally not open to the public. However, they are accessible once a year as part of the Open Monument Day. You can view the ivy-covered ruins from outside the site at other times.
The Hunenborg Ringfort is a historical site dating from the Middle Ages. It features a wide ditch surrounding an easily recognizable hill, indicating its past as a defensive structure. While there isn't an information board on site, it's an interesting place to explore the region's ancient fortifications.
The beautifully situated cultural monument Huis te Breckelenkamp is privately inhabited and unfortunately cannot be visited inside. You may only view the property from outside the site.
In Uelsen, you can find the historical Location of Toerne Castle, believed to be the original seat of the Toerne family, castle guards of Bentheim Castle. Another significant site is the Site of Burg Dinkelrode, first mentioned in 1328, though its buildings were largely dismantled in the 18th century, with only the chapel remaining.
While many sites are historical ruins, the Hunenborg Ringfort can be an interesting outdoor exploration for families, offering a chance to imagine medieval defenses. For a more traditional castle experience with extensive grounds and exhibits, nearby Bentheim Castle is very family-friendly.
The spring and summer months (April to September) are generally ideal for visiting the castle sites around Uelsen. The weather is more pleasant for exploring outdoor ruins and historical sites. If you plan to visit Lage Castle Ruins, check for the annual Open Monument Day, which typically occurs in September.
The Hunenborg Ringfort is situated on an easily recognizable hill, offering some elevated views of the immediate surroundings. For truly breathtaking panoramic views, the Powder Tower at Bentheim Castle provides expansive vistas of Bad Bentheim and the castle park.
The Uelsen region offers various outdoor activities. You can find numerous hiking trails, such as the 'Bronze Age Farm Uelsen – Uelsen Windmill loop' or the 'Waldbad Uelsen – Small Pond Near Uelsen loop'. There are also road cycling routes like 'Springendal: Climb and Descent – Lönsberg Climb loop' and running trails. Near the Lage Castle Ruins, you can find the 'Malle Mühle' tea room, which is open Thursday-Sunday afternoons and on public holidays. For other sites, you might need to venture into the nearby towns or Uelsen itself for dining options.
Visitors appreciate the historical significance and the opportunity to explore the remnants of past fortifications. The Huis te Breckelenkamp is admired for its beautiful setting, even if only viewable from outside. The Hunenborg Ringfort offers a unique historical landscape. The komoot community has shared over 71 photos and given more than 290 upvotes, highlighting the visual appeal and historical interest of these locations.
