Stormsteich Pond

Highlight • Lake

A fairly large pond that used to be used intensively for fishing. Since 1990 it has been converted back to the biotope. That seems to be working well. A bench (brand new and clean) invites you to linger in the shade, while you can watch the water birds drifting.

Muldsberg Clay Pit Lake

Highlight • Lake

In the pit in the Muldsberg district, clay was mined from 1936 to 1996 for cement production by the companies in Breitenburger Portland-Cement-Fabrik, Alsen and Holcim.

The mining in the open pit was carried out with a bucket chain excavator. Until 1964, the material was brought to the edge of the pit by cable car and then by conveyor belts, and from there it was transported by truck to the cement works in Lägerdorf. After the abandonment of the neighboring Alsen clay pits near Wacken, the clay was transported for a short time (1974 to 1977) with the Alsens cable car to Itzehoe. The clay mining was stopped in 1996, the dismantling of all conveyor belts took place until 1999.

Since the artificial dewatering was discontinued in 2004, the pit has been filling with groundwater. The water and its surroundings are being developed as a biotope and for local recreation. There is a five-kilometer circular route with resting places around the water.

Edendorf Clay Pit

Highlight • Lake

The Edendorfer Tonkuhle in the Edendorf district of Itzehoe is a residual open pit lake. Since there are several clay pits in Edendorf, it is also referred to as the large Edendorfer clay pit to distinguish it from the smaller ones.

After clay was quarried at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the pit filled with water and was later turned into a green area. [1] Today the water is also used as fishing water.

Klosterbrunnenteich

Highlight • Lake

From the point where the Forellenbach flows into the Itze, the Itze flows west for about 230 m in a curve that bends southwards, at the southernmost point of which it receives two more streams from the direction of the park, and then passes under the forest path that branches off from Vorderholzweg behind the Itzehoe swimming pool.

It then runs in the valley channel between the swimming pool area and Vorderholzweg for about 200 m further westwards and finally flows into the Klosterbrunnen pond on its east side. The pond receives inflow not only from the Itze but also from the Klosterbrunnen rainwater treatment plant from the direction of Ostlandplatz and another sewage plant on the south side of the pond as well as from the Schlangenbach.

A "Jungfrauenborn" mentioned in the 16th century appears to be identical to the Klosterbrunnen or to have been located in its area. The name “Klosterbrunnen” goes back to the spring in the forest that was then part of the monastery’s territory and was then the name of an inn that was set up around 1825. “Klosterbrunnen” is still the name of the inn that is located by the pond and has since been rebuilt, as well as the road that runs along the pond, inn and swimming pool.

The streets “Alte Landstraße” and “Klosterbrunnen” used to be part of the western military and trade route; the straight connection that the Alte Landstraße now takes through the Lehmwohld was only created at the end of the 1930s. To the north of the Klosterbrunnen there once stood the monastery’s brickworks (“Tegelie”) and the brick barn (“Tegelschün”), which is also where the name “Tegelhörn” (Ziegelhöhe/Ziegeleihöhe), which was probably first mentioned in documents in the 19th century, goes back to in the area that has been settled since the 1930s. The area between Brunnenstrasse Cemetery and Klosterbrunnen and the new residential area “Wohnpark Klosterforst” was still undeveloped at the time and was known as “Tegelkamp” or “Ziegelkamp” in the middle of the 19th century. In the brickworks, run by a master bricklayer and a bricklayer, bricks were made from brick earth (clay and loam) brought in from the surrounding area for the Itzehoe Monastery’s own use and for sale. The brickworks was still mentioned as being located there in 1837.

The Old Harbor of Burg looks back on a long history. It was once an important transshipment point for shipping in Dithmarschen and shaped life in the town for many decades. Today, the calm lake is reminiscent of the time of sailors and boatmen and makes the past of the place still palpable.
