If you are looking for the oldest, most direct, fastest and most popular route (starting early helps) up Table Mountain and want to really get your heart racing, then this is the right place for you. A trail that consists mostly of rock steps, "stair climbing for advanced climbers" so to speak. 2.5 km and 650 meters of elevation gain are overcome. If you don't have enough time to fit a climb up Table Mountain into your vacation itinerary, we highly recommend it - we were impressed!

Bourke's Luck Potholes

Highlight • Gorge

The Bourke’s Luck Potholes (English, in German: Bourkes Glück Strudelöcher) are a rock unit on the Panorama Route in the province of Mpumalanga in the east of South Africa, near Graskop on the R532.

At the confluence of the Treur River and the Blyde River, erosion of the flowing water in the red sandstone has created a canyon that merges into the Blyde River Canyon. By further washing out, in particular by the movement of stones in whirlpools, deep whirlpool holes and kettles have been cut into the rock.

The sight was named after the gold prospector Tom Bourke, who found a small amount of gold at this location (the associated gold vein was, however, outside of his claim).

Tugela Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

Great hike, easy to find - it leads time and again through small refreshing "groves" - nevertheless, one is the sun exposed mostly mercilessly - so necessarily plenty of water and sunscreen take;
Also impressive are the red "bottle-brush-trees", which distribute red swabs in the green landscape in the spring.

Augrabies Falls — Main Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

During our visit, the water in the Orange River ran rather sparsely over the cliffs because it had been extremely dry for several years. After rains, unbelievable masses of water shoot into the deeper gorge.
The path leads over wooden walkways to the viewpoints and leads past numerous Dassies and colorful lizards that loll on the rocks in the sun.

Best part of the arduous climb! After a lot of scrambling and climbing ladders, all paths to the right and left of the watercourse suddenly end. Now we go steeply up through the bed of the waterfall, which consists of coarse scree with damp treads. I was wondering how people here get along in white sneakers 👟, sandals 🩴 and other light footwear? But it seems to be working. In any case, I was grateful for my hiking boots 🥾.

Waterfall Hiking Trail Montagu

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This is a part of the return to the start of the Bloupunt Hiking Trail, circular route. Can be done as a short hike to see the gorge and waterfalls. There is a water filter located in the rock pool, with a pipe connected, which makes filling your hydration bladder, or Nalgene bottle a breeze for the end stretch of the Bloupunt Hike. To get to the Silver Stream Waterfall it's a very steep climb, and suggested viewing would rather be when returning on the Bloupunt Trail i.e. on the way down.

India Venster Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

A beautiful viewpoint on a very nice trail. However, a clear view is a prerequisite. This time we were unlucky due to a cloudy view. The firm intention to do this trail again, with an extensive photo stop at this viewpoint, has been noted.

December 28, 2025, Platteklip Gorge Hiking Trail

Plan for longer breaks and bring plenty of food and drink! The "steps" are sometimes higher than expected, and the sun gets quite hot. But it's absolutely beautiful :)

Have an early start to avoid the crowds that quickly build up on days with good weather. Wear layers especially in winter as the top can quickly get to low temperatures.

Hans Karl
January 19, 2025, Platteklip Gorge

I completed the trail in January 2025, from about 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in sunshine. I'm 70, do a 7 km walk on flat land about five times a week at a brisk pace, play tennis, and am quite fit for my age. To describe the "Platteklipp Gorge Hiking Trail" as challenging is, to say the least, an understatement. It's definitely not a nature-oriented hiking trail like you'd imagine in the Allgäu region, for example. The terrain consists exclusively!!!! of boulders in the "Fred Flintstone" design, often with footholds of 40-50 cm! At times, I had to negotiate the incline in the upper switchbacks on all fours. Every now and then, there's a "railing" made of thin barbed wire. Very user-friendly🙈 When I reached the top, I was completely exhausted. If someone were to give up due to exhaustion or injury, I can hardly imagine being rescued by stretcher. If the way up was already a challenge, the way down would probably be even more challenging. In any case, a way back down beyond the cable car would have been unimaginable for me. Of course, this would be a different prospect at a much younger age, that's for sure. The scenic experience and the view of Cape Town are, however, without a doubt breathtaking. I must strongly advise older people who only occasionally hike on relatively flat terrain, perhaps with a high BMI and/or even classic "rubber potatoes" who just want to "hike" up Table Mountain!!!! against Platteklip Gorge.

There are also hikes at the Bourkes Luck Potholes. These have to be registered and you need a permit which costs something. It would be possible from about 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. 🌞👌

The Panorama Route is a tourist attraction in the Transvaal-Drakensberg in the province of Mpumalanga in the east of South Africa. It is a region with tourist attractions due to the steep slopes with views far into the lowland of the Lowveld and interesting rock formations along the road. The route known as the Panorama Route runs on the regional road R532 and on a section of the R37.[1][2] The tourist information center is located in the town of Graskop. The Panorama Route also includes the Bourke Luck 🍀 Potholes 😎☺️

The Graskop Gorge Lift Company is the entry point into the heart of one of Mpumalanga's last forested wonderlands. Surrounded by towering cliffs thrown back over time by the Motitsi River, its waters cascading 70m into the gorge below.
