A beautiful reservoir is nestled in a valley. You can ride a bike out the back and continue riding, even if there is a dead end sign at the entrance. This only applies to cars. It is most beautiful in summer as it is usually cool and shady there.

This road is currently closed due to danger to life!! There are also extra stones blown up!! Workers are active. We're through today 09/07/23. In places there are extremely many thick 🪨 stones. Please do not drive while it is closed. Otherwise super awesome route.

⚠️ Please note ⚠️ You must not believe the hiking signs. If you follow the hiking signs you ONLY get to the viewing platform "Teufelskueche" and it is above the "Teufelskuechen- Badestelle". You can NOT get to the water from the platform, only from the street side (L154). There is also a small parking area for about 3 cars.

Closed again since May 2023 due to a rockfall. It will likely not reopen to traffic until autumn. The barrier is easily bypassed by bicycle, and the path is clear for 6 beautiful, car-free kilometers. I would generally recommend using this road as an ascent, as there are already many loose rocks scattered in some places. However, I rode it downhill today (June 15th), and even that was manageable without much braking if you pay a little attention.

This picture from the upper end of the lake gives a good indication of the many great views and panoramic views of this circular hike. The sections from Berau to Allmut and the ascent from the Schwarzatal to Berau were good, sometimes challenging hiking trails (when going up or down, absolute surefootedness and really sturdy hiking shoes are required; hiking poles are helpful). In between, the path was concreted or asphalted. Unfortunately, there was not a single bench or picnic area in the entire Schwarzatal section and the ascent to the Fischbrünnleweg; there is still potential for optimization. Fortunately, the small wooden bridge was in good condition and could be used as a rest area.

The Waldshut-Tiengen region in the Southern Black Forest is home to several impressive canyons, including the Wutach Gorge, the Gauchach Gorge, and the Alb Gorge. These natural formations offer diverse geological insights and varied terrain for exploration.
The Alb Gorge is known for its striking Teufelsküche Rock Formations and Pools, where the Alb river has carved impressive whirlpools over millennia. The gorge also features trails that run high above the river or directly along its shore, offering a densely forested valley experience.
The Wutach Gorge, often called Germany's largest canyon, is a vital natural conservation area. It's known for its geological importance, with various layers of sedimentary rock, and rich ecosystems, hosting about 1200 of Central Europe's 2500 plant species. The gorge can reach depths of up to 200 meters along its 30-kilometer length.
Yes, the Gauchach Gorge offers a forest nature trail with adventure stations, making it an educational and enjoyable experience for families and children. While some paths include narrow wooden footbridges and sections carved into rock faces requiring surefootedness, it provides a tranquil natural setting.
The best seasons for visiting the canyons, particularly the Wutach Gorge, are early summer and autumn. Autumn foliage is especially captivating. These periods generally offer pleasant weather for hiking and exploring the natural beauty.
The Gauchach Gorge often provides a quieter alternative to the Wutach Gorge, even on sunny days, making it ideal for those seeking a more tranquil natural experience. The Alb Gorge also offers a quiet natural setting within the Black Forest, away from larger crowds.
The canyons offer a variety of hiking experiences. Trails in the Wutach Gorge can be demanding, requiring good footwear and surefootedness. The Gauchach Gorge features diverse terrain suitable for various fitness levels, including easy family walks. The Alb Gorge, traversed by the Albsteig, has trails that sometimes run high above the river and sometimes directly along its shore, with varied terrain and picturesque waterfalls.
While specific regulations vary by trail, many natural areas in the Black Forest are dog-friendly. It's generally advisable to keep dogs on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure safety on potentially challenging terrain. Always check local signage for specific rules.
Beyond exploring the canyons themselves, the region offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find easy hikes, running trails, and waterfall hikes. For example, there are easy hikes like the 'Swans on the Rhine – Waldshut Old Town loop' and running trails such as the 'Tiengen Old Town – Wutach Riverside Trail loop'. You can explore more options on the Easy hikes around Waldshut Tiengen, Running Trails around Waldshut Tiengen, and Waterfall hikes around Waldshut Tiengen guide pages.
Yes, the Teufelsküche Rock Formations and Pools in the Alb Gorge offers a viewpoint to observe the geological impacts of the river. Additionally, the Witznau Reservoir on the Schwarza, situated in a wide, deep ravine, provides an idyllic and quiet setting with nice views.
Given the demanding nature of some trails, especially in the Wutach Gorge, good footwear is essential. Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support are recommended. Layered clothing is also advisable to adapt to changing weather conditions, and rain gear is always a good idea in the Black Forest.
While specific parking and public transport details vary for each canyon entrance, the region is generally accessible. For detailed information on reaching the Wutach Gorge, you can check resources like visit-bw.com. For the Gauchach Gorge, further details can be found on visit-bw.com.
