At Farol da Ponta da Piedade, you can climb down a steep stairway reminiscent of the old seafaring season. Barranco do Demo Walkway

Highlight • Trail

In summer 2023, a new wooden walkway with stairs and a suspension bridge was built to make this beautiful valley and great views accessible even for hikers who are not sure-footed.
In summer, only recommended in the morning or evening hours - down in the valley it can be calm and very hot. Please always take something to drink with you. In the northern section there are approx. 213 (possibly +13) steps, in the southern section approx. 352 steps - a total of just over 1100 there and back. Access in the north behind the cemetery (tarmac road), in the south at the starting point of this tour recording (gravel road, only a few parking spaces).

Algar Seco Rock Formations

Steep cliffs, which are surrounded by local anglers (I had no real success), as well as a walk through caves hit in the cliffs and bizarre, purged rock formations make this place so varied

Away from the Rota Vicentina and not without danger. It's better to turn around when you see the view of the gorge or follow the marked path.

April 7, 2026, Barranco do Demo Walkway

Stunning natural gorge located near the village of Alferce in the Monchique mountains. The area is a "green island" in the Algarve, featuring cork oaks, strawberry trees (medronheiros), and unique rock formations. Make sure you wear hiking shoes and bring some water. In the weekend on one site of the valley there is a convenience stand.

We found it too dangerous to climb through the gorge, even though I've hiked a lot on the South West Coast Path in England. Unfortunately, we had to take the inland route back to the car park instead of going through the gorge. It looks like the official hiking trail was moved away from the coast here for good reason.

The Barranco do Demo Boardwalk is a spectacular wooden walkway near Alferce in the Algarve, featuring a 50-meter-long suspension bridge spanning a deep gorge. The route is approximately 1 km long and is part of a larger 6 km walk around the village. The path offers impressive views, but also includes many steps and elevation changes, making it somewhat challenging. It has been open since 2023 and attracts many visitors.

Good hiking boots are required; hiking poles are helpful in some places.

The path offers a great opportunity to get to know the beaches between Praia do Vau and Praia da Rocha from above.

Had a beautiful walk today, but had to walk through water twice. There is no bridge or stepping stone, but there was a tree in both places for the acrobats among us who can walk over it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most notable coastal rock formations and sea caves to explore in the Algarve?

The Algarve is famous for its dramatic coastal formations. Among the most popular are Ponta da Piedade — Cliffs and Rock Formations, known for its grottoes and arches near Lagos. Another must-see is the Algar de Benagil Coastal Cliffs, which includes the iconic Benagil Cave with its unique skylight. You can also explore the intricate Algar Seco Rock Formations near Carvoeiro.

Are there hiking trails that offer views of the Algarve's coastal 'canyons'?

Yes, several trails provide stunning views of the region's unique coastal geology. The Coastal Trails between Coves (Algarve Cliffs) offer many winding paths from bay to bay. Another excellent option is the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, which runs between Senhora da Rocha and Benagil, showcasing dramatic cliff edges and sea caves. The Clifftop Trail between Praia do Vau and Praia da Rocha is also a popular choice.

What is the Barranco do Demo Walkway and what makes it unique?

The Barranco do Demo Walkway is an inland trail near Alferce featuring a new wooden walkway and a 50-meter-long suspension bridge spanning a deep gorge. It offers impressive views and includes many steps and elevation changes, making it a challenging but rewarding experience. It's a different type of 'gorge' experience compared to the coastal formations.

What is the best time of year to visit the Algarve for exploring its coastal formations and trails?

The best time to visit for exploring the coastal formations and hiking trails is typically during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these seasons, the weather is pleasant, temperatures are milder, and the crowds are smaller than in the peak summer months. Summer can be very hot, especially in the valleys or on exposed trails, so morning or evening visits are recommended then.

Are there family-friendly options for exploring the Algarve's coastal features?

Many of the coastal areas are suitable for families, especially those with accessible viewpoints or beaches. Boat tours to places like Ponta da Piedade or Benagil Cave can be a fun experience for all ages. Some clifftop trails, like sections of the Clifftop Trail between Praia do Vau and Praia da Rocha, are also considered family-friendly, though sure-footedness is always recommended on coastal paths.

What kind of natural features can I expect to see along the Algarve's 'Golden Coast'?

Along the 'Golden Coast,' you'll encounter a stunning array of natural features carved by the Atlantic Ocean. These include towering limestone cliffs, intricate sea caves, natural arches like the Arcos de Marinha, and grottoes with unique rock formations. The vibrant turquoise waters contrasting with the golden-hued cliffs create a breathtaking landscape, perfect for photography and nature observation.

Where can I find hidden or less-known coastal formations in the Algarve?

While many formations are well-known, some offer a more secluded experience. Captain's Cave (Gruta do Capitão), located between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra, is known for its hidden beach inside. Access is challenging, typically by boat at low tide and calm conditions, which adds to its allure. Exploring trails like Leixão do Ladrão can also lead to impressive, less crowded rock formations.

What outdoor activities can I do near the Algarve's coastal formations?

Beyond exploring the formations themselves, the Algarve offers a variety of outdoor activities. You can find numerous road cycling routes, such as those detailed in the Road Cycling Routes at the Algarve guide. Mountain biking enthusiasts can explore trails listed in the MTB Trails at the Algarve guide, and there are also many scenic mountain hikes, including those around Monchique, as found in the Mountain Hikes at the Algarve guide.

Are there opportunities for wild swimming or water activities near the coastal 'canyons'?

Yes, the Algarve's coastline is perfect for water activities. Many of the sea caves and grottoes, such as those at Ponta da Piedade and Benagil, are best explored by kayak or stand-up paddleboard, allowing you to get close to the formations and enjoy the clear waters. While landing on the beach inside Benagil Cave is restricted, many coves and beaches along the coast offer excellent spots for swimming and snorkeling.

What do visitors enjoy most about the Algarve's coastal 'canyons' and trails?

Visitors frequently praise the breathtaking natural beauty and unique geological formations. The interplay of light and shadow in caves like Benagil, the vibrant turquoise waters, and the sheer scale of the cliffs are often highlighted. Many appreciate the opportunity for boat tours, kayaking, and hiking along the scenic coastal paths, finding them perfect for relaxation and capturing stunning photographs.

Is parking available near the popular coastal formations and trailheads?

Parking availability varies by location. Popular spots like Ponta da Piedade and Benagil often have designated parking areas, though these can fill up quickly during peak season. For trailheads, such as the Barranco do Demo Walkway, parking might be more limited, sometimes requiring parking behind a cemetery or at specific starting points. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during busy times, or consider public transport where available.

What are the 'hanging valleys' mentioned in relation to the Algarve's coast?

The 'hanging valleys' refer to a unique geological phenomenon along the Algarve's coast, particularly visible on the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. These are dry river valleys that have been eroded by the sea, causing them to end abruptly at the cliff edge, appearing to 'hang' above the ocean. They are a testament to the powerful erosive forces that have shaped the region's dramatic coastline over millions of years.
