Tauchritz Moated Castle

Highlight • Castle

The history of the village goes back to the 13th century. 1317 an Otto de Tucharaz is handed down. The old Sorbian Tucharaz designates Tauchritz as possession of a Tuchorad. The historical village and field shape could indicate that the place existed before the medieval colonization of the 13th century. In 1357 the "Veste Tucheraz" was mentioned for the first time, a predecessor of the later moated castle. What remains of the Veste (castle) is perhaps the round tower on the east side of the current building. In 1322 the village and manor were owned by Eymuth von Neueshoven. In the years 1349 to 1422 in the hands of those from Biberstein, who also ruled over the fortified facilities on the Landeskrone. In 1427 the village is said to have been destroyed by the Hussites. Then until 1611 in the possession of the Gersdorf family. These sold to the Kretscham and Kirchlehn Georg von Warndorf. The chronicle tells us that on May 5th, 1683 the manor along with the outbuildings, church, school building, vicarage and farm burned down to the ground. The widow Maria Sidonia von Warnsdorf née Gersdorf had the estate rebuilt in 1686/87. As it still stands today. (When building the moated castle, the master builders followed French models and are comparable to those at the Zwinger in Dresden). The castle is privately owned.

In 1749 a descendant sold the complex to the evangelical, worldly aristocratic Frauleinstift Joachimstein near Radmaritz.

Łagòw (Leopoldshain) is a small place next to Zgorzelec. The history dates back to the 14th century. Owners and possessors changed very often and it was rebuilt again and again. The castle houses a hotel and a restaurant. The latter can only be recommended.

Świecie Castle ruins, unfortunately closed and no information. Inside you can see that a renovation has started. Everything is locked, secured with barbed wire. Maybe something will change in the future. Otherwise a very interesting castle.
