The three-story Renaissance building of the historic town hall, with its over 57-meter-high tower and leaning windows, is an iconic sight on the market square. The magnificent main portal on the market side depicts the coats of arms of Reuss and Solms, as well as the former three-man council of Gera's mayors. Not far from the portal, the historic pillory from 1754 can still be seen today. The octagonal town hall tower has adorned the market square since the 16th century. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the watchman's room was occupied by the watchman, who was appointed by the city to report fires. Today, the town hall tower is open to the public. A magnificent 360-degree panoramic view awaits visitors after climbing 163 steps from the 34-meter-high platform. A hand-played carrilon has sounded from the tower lantern since 1988. The carillon is very popular in Gera. https://www.gera.de/tourismus-freizeit-kultur/stadt-erleben/sehenswertes/rathaus

Next to the town hall, another Renaissance building flanks Gera's historic market square: The City Pharmacy. With its richly decorated bay window, it is one of the most impressive buildings in the city center. From 1847 onwards, the building was used as a pharmacy. The traditional City Pharmacy is still located on the ground floor today. The Gera Art Association organizes changing exhibitions on the upper floor. Under the City Pharmacy are two of Gera's caves dating back to 1712. Even then, the deep cellars had the ideal temperature for storing tinctures, cod liver oil, and juices. https://www.gera.de/tourismus-freizeit-kultur/stadt-erleben/sehenswertes/stadtapotheke

It is documented that a church stood on this site as early as 1237. In 1665, the church was destroyed in the great city fire, but it was rebuilt a year later. The over 30-meter-high late Gothic church tower was built between 1684 and 1686.
