Great area for a hike. If you do not want to go the full circle alternatives to walking back on the same track are a bit limited.

From the village of Upper Hambleton there is a path that takes you round the peninsula. It is around 4m in length.

Fairly enjoyable walk. Although many miles spent walking by roadsides with limited/no view of the reservoir. People who follow this route (as I did), please be aware that around 2.7 miles in, the restricted access warning prevented any access of the route whatsoever (unless obtaining permission/key pass). This left me having to detour back up to the main road and added a further 1.5 miles onto my route and a couple of failed attempts trying to get back to the route again. This route is definitely more suited to cyclists, but worth the go on a nice day.

A lovely 102-acre (41 ha) country park, East Carlton is located near the town of Corby. It was once a deer park centred around a historic hall. The present iteration was built in 1870 in an Italianate style with French pavilion roofs. Today, the park contains beautiful woodland, small lakes, a dinosaur safari, a campsite, heritage centre and a cafe.

If you are walking/cycling the full circuit on the track note that Barnsdale parking is £3 compared to £10 at the other car parks and the best refreshments are at the Rutland Nurseries Cafe between Manton and the Lynton reserve, or the Horse & Jockey pub in Manton who finished their refurbishment last week.

Lovely place for a picnic, but be aware that most of the routes out involve some serious climbing for this part of the world. Like Norfolk, not all Rutland is as flat as many think.

One of the few places many local people are prepared to cycle, using the tracks around Rutland Water which are traffic-free. As Iain says, it can be very busy in summer and at weekends. The Giant store at the car-park is handy if you need an emergency fix, not to mention a new bike or kit. As a committed roadie I often call in at the car-park for a lunch outdoors at the cafe. The roads along the South Shore are much quieter than the A606 along the North Shore.
