In the 12th century, the "Freienwalde Castle" stood on a small spur above the town. In the 19th century, an artificial ruin was built on the now-defunct castle, which today serves as a lookout point. Only the remains of the moat remain. This ruin (the former Freienwalde Castle) is connected to the Bismarck Tower (standing on the remains of the former Malchow Castle) northwest of here by old tunnels. The castles and later lookout towers/points served as part of a defensive system along the edge of the Oderbruch and protected against enemies from the east. Today, one can enjoy a beautiful view of the town and into Bruch from here.

On the "Ruinenberg" (vineyard) called "Beautiful View" on the site of a medieval tower hill, the District Administrator v. Reichenbach 1820 built a lookout tower in the form of an artificial ruin. This is a field stone building with a former small chapel. A narrow footpath or stairs run north from Weinbergstraße and further to the eastern tip of the ruins hill. The lookout offers a view of the city.

The forest in Märkische Schweiz is just beautiful. You can go hiking or biking there. One or the other tree can get in the way.
