Vor Frue Church Svendborg

Highlight • Religious Site

The oldest part of Vor Frue Stadrkirche are the side walls from the tower to the transepts. This part of the church dates from the Romanesque period and is made of brick. In the late Gothic period, the original Romanesque choir was torn down and replaced by the current choir. On the same occasion the transepts were added to the north and south. The vault of the church also comes from this renovation. The church vestibule on the south side and the tower on the west were added later. In 1768 the tower got its double lantern top.

A very nice rest area with a top-notch shelter, even with electricity. And a wonderful view of the old Søbygaard estate.

Anne Hvide's Farm was built in the 1560s by the noblewoman Anne Hvide of Rødkilde, making it, along with the churches, the oldest building in Svendborg. In 1900, Svendborg Municipality took over the farm. Afterward, it became the treasurer's office and the seat of the tax assessment commission. By this time, some of the original buildings had already been demolished. For a time, it housed a city and county library and even a mayor's office. After a somewhat turbulent life, Anne Hvide's old house was handed over to the board of the Svendborg County Museum in 1912 in exchange for a thorough restoration. In 1915, Anne Hvide's Farm was converted into a museum. The Svendborg Museum was located here until 1974, when it moved to its current location in the old almshouse at Grubbemøllevej 13. For many years, Anne Hvide's farm was used for special exhibitions and Christmas events. Today, the building is no longer open to the public, as fire regulations limit the number of visitors in the house to 10 at a time. https://svendborgmuseum.dk/om-museet/anne-hvides-gaard/

The Church of Our Lady is located at Frue Kirkestræde 8, in 5700 Svendborg. It was probably built in the first half of the 12th century with a nave and chancel. In the second half of the 14th century, the church was converted into a nave with the construction of a new chancel. The transepts, of which the northern one is the oldest, were probably built around 1400. The tower and porch were built in the late Middle Ages. The sacristy, dating from 1884, replaced a medieval sacristy on the same site. The church received its present appearance through an extensive restoration in 1884. The altarpiece dates from around 1604, with paintings by C.W. Eckersberg from 1824-1825. The pulpit has the dates 1597 and 1599 carved into the basket. The figures of the basket and other details were carved in 1884 by the woodcarver Erik Nielsen from Hesselager. The baptismal font, dating from 1884, was made by the sculptor Otto Evens. https://kirker.dk/kirke/vor-frue-kirke-svendborg/

The Havfruebrønden fountain is much more than just a fountain in Svendborg's city center. This impressive sculpture was created in 1929 by the artist Niels Hansen Jacobsen and forms an aesthetic interplay of bronze mermaids, fish, and a stylish basin. With its eventful history—from its original installation to several moves within the city to its current location at Torvet—the figure tells not only of art, but also of the transformation of public space. https://www.visitvejen.de/visitvejen/planlaeg-din-tur/mermaid-fountain-baekke-gdk967439
