Very washed out, with deep ruts and very rough rocky sections. Still good to ride.

A hidden, surprisingly long and challenging trail that demands a lot from the tires - especially when wet. Flowy sections alternate with rough root and stone passages. Some deep spots with no way to avoid them, always close to the water. Two small wooden bridges and a waterfall round it all off. I came across it by chance and will often include this section in my tours. Due to the narrow width, you have to be more careful of hikers on weekends.

Beautiful in the middle of the forest a few meters away from the main path. Super

Great trail, a little steep at the beginning with gullies, later flowing along the stream, ending over a dried-up gravel stream and a waterfall at the end. Wow, what more could you want.

Beautiful forest path along the stream which, at least when the water flow is good, spreads roaring "natural noise" at the jump in the terrain 😉. Not the ultimate highlight, but romantic + beautiful to look at. 🙂👍

Very cool trail, with the waterfall as the highlight. You have to be a little careful. It is slippery in places and there are also hikers.

Absolute recommendation 👍🤩🥾🌳🌲🌱🌊! The nature trail through the Kühle Valley is beautiful. The whole time it leads directly along the reed water. Because of the moisture there is a lot of mosses in all shades of green. When the stream has a lot of water (like now in February), the many cascades rustle wonderfully. The highlight is of course the reed waterfall. At the ends of the path there are signs “Caution! Very demanding path!” . I found it easy to walk on. It is a natural path with lots of stones and roots. If it is very wet, there can be some slippery sections. Good shoes with treads are recommended. At first the path only climbs gently, then it becomes steeper in the upper section. I can only warmly recommend this route, ideally up from the scout camp to the Heuberghaus. This is the best time to enjoy the cascades of the stream.

The region around Leinatal, within the Thuringian Forest, features both natural and artificial cascades. You'll find idyllic natural formations like the Spitterfall, which is the highest natural waterfall in Thuringia, as well as more dramatic, man-made spectacles like the Trusetal Waterfall. Some areas also feature gorges with cascades, such as The Röllchen Gorge and Waterfall.
Yes, two stand out: the Spitterfall, considered the highest natural waterfall in Thuringia with a 32-meter drop over stepped rock formations, and the Trusetal Waterfall, an impressive artificial cascade plunging approximately 50 meters in three stages. Both offer unique and memorable experiences.
Hiking conditions vary. For instance, the path to Spitterfall Waterfall can be steep and challenging, especially in wet or snowy conditions, requiring sure-footedness and sturdy shoes. Other trails, like the Kühles Tal Nature Trail and Schilfwasserfall, offer intermediate difficulty and are suitable for those interested in flora and fauna.
While specific family-friendly ratings aren't always available for every waterfall, the Trusetal Waterfall is known for being a popular tourist destination, especially in summer, with amenities like a snack bar and a nearby 'Zwergen Park' (Dwarf Park) that can appeal to families. Natural trails like the Kühles Tal Nature Trail offer a pleasant experience for those who enjoy walking in nature.
The region offers various outdoor activities. You can explore numerous cycling routes, such as those found in the Cycling around Leinatal guide, or tackle mountain biking trails from the MTB Trails around Leinatal guide. There are also dedicated Running Trails around Leinatal for joggers.
The period between April and October is generally recommended, especially for the Trusetal Waterfall, as its flow is consistently maintained during these months. Visiting during spring after snowmelt or heavy rains can also offer a more impressive display of natural waterfalls like the Spitterfall.
Yes, several. The Spitterfall is recognized as a geological natural monument, and a viewpoint called 'Spitterblick' along the Rennsteig trail offers magnificent views. The Schilf Waterfall is also a natural monument, and The Röllchen Gorge and Waterfall is known for its natural gorge features.
Visitors frequently praise the natural beauty and idyllic settings. Many describe the Spitterfall as 'idyllic' and 'beautiful in nature.' The Schilf Waterfall is considered a 'worthwhile detour' into a 'cool valley,' and The Röllchen Gorge and Waterfall is appreciated for its 'beautiful and partly alpine rocky gorge' experience.
Some waterfalls, particularly the more popular ones like the Trusetal Waterfall, offer amenities such as a snack bar. The Spitterfall is also listed as having facilities nearby. For other locations, it's advisable to check local information or plan to bring your own provisions.
Yes, there are hiking and cycling routes that lead to waterfalls, including circular trails. For example, a 14 km circular trail from Tambach-Dietharz includes the Spitterfall. The Kühles Tal Nature Trail is also a scenic route that includes the Schilfwasserfall.
Trails leading to waterfalls, especially those with challenging terrain like Spitterfall Waterfall, can be slippery after rain. Sturdy shoes are highly recommended. Some gorges, like The Röllchen Gorge and Waterfall, feature partly alpine rocky sections with chains for support, indicating the need for caution and good footwear.
While not explicitly labeled as 'hidden gems,' the Schilf Waterfall, located in a 'cool valley' and described as a 'worthwhile detour,' offers a serene experience that might feel more secluded than the larger, more prominent waterfalls. Its natural monument status also adds to its unique appeal.
